You could change them quickly, but once spotted it wouldnt matter, £30 fine, keep doing it and they will impound your car.

Get proper plates

You've got a plate spaced illegally - so if you do get puled, it'll be for that, they won't pull you 'for nothing'

Either way of fixing it on is fine, as long as it doesn't fall off, or someone steals it. I'd just get a legal one though.

Velcro.. replace it if they stop you. say that you forgot to put your original ones back on and hope that batman will land right next to you and tel them to leave you alone. or simply get legal ones...

Just get a legal one. Show plates are cool. I'm after a black one with white lettering for my LCR

Just get legal plates. Don't see the point in illegal plates, just look like a plum.

17years old and dodgy plates, Mate your just asking for the fuzz to pull you over and give the car the once over.

When I first started driving I made dam sure everything on the car was legal.

Put the old plates back on and get on with it. There is a reason why there is a legal restricition on plate size and spacing stick to it and you will be fine.

I know the ones you mean, technically they aren't show plates as cars before 1972 had them on. I don't see the attraction with them tbh, but that's just me. Loads of big cars (big mercs & jags etc) round my way have them.

It's only if you use them now that they'd become show plates, as they aren't road legal.

One thing i've wondered is, if you have a dateless reg (private one off of an old car) can you have a black & silver plate ??

Here is my plate. Leagly spaced but silver shaddow. It has passed a few MOT's with it.

why? you're just asking for trouble.

and if a copper is behind you, and pulls you over, what u gonna do, use ur jedi mind tricks while you serupticiously switch the plates over?

  you may know it, clio?
no, just ask if i can change them.

unless i do have jedi powers i didnt know about?

  ?
The coppers not stupid, he would still give you the £30 fine unless your lucky. Illegal number plates look shite anyway most of the time.

btw ur not far from me!

Why are you asking if you are not listening to the replies ? lol
You are going to do what you want anyway...so go do it....but stay on the look out for a new plate for when your one gets confiscated.

If you have illegally spaced plates prepare for them to go over the car with a fine tooth comb when you get pulled, tyre treads the works. Mine would look better illegally spaced but at the moment its legal and it will probably stay that way.

They will fine you if you are carrying legal plates knowing full well that yours are illegal. Can't play the ignorance card then.

Also from 17-18 I drove a black mk1, with a stupidly loud exhaust and induction kit. I didn't get pulled once.

I know what you asked.....but everyone is telling you not to do it at all.
So you choose lol

For the record...heavy duty velcro holds plates on perfectly fine...mine have been on velcro for well over a year and had no hassle with it

  you may know it, clio?
thankyou :]

thats all pretty much what i wanted to know

i know i shouldnt have it but i got it for cheap

It wont matter how you fix them mate, if you get seen with them you'll get a producer and a fine. Not sure why it matters that theyre on velcro etc.

Doesnt matter if theyre velcroed on and you can change them at the roadside. If you have the legal plates ready in your car, coppers arnt dumb, they'll want to know why they werent being displayed in place of the show plates. Ive just left a car show isnt a very clever excuse, lol.

If you get caught 3 times misrepresenting your plate (which belongs to the dvla) the dvla will confiscate it.

You just know that there will be a post on here in week or so complaining about being busted for having illegally spaced plates ;)
Typical cs stylee !

I'm quite surprised with all the comments on here tbh, MOST police officers would take a rather reasonable view if it is not a 'fancy plate' and just a bit of different spacing.

Mine:

And I've never been pulled, passed 2 MOTs and am fairly confident that if I were to be pulled, the first thing the copper would do would be to just tell me to get it changed asap. It's all about attitude, driving style and behaviour with police - respect them and admit you're at fault and you'll be unlucky to get fined. Yes, they can do it, but nobody I personally know has ever been given a fine for a number plate irregularity.

There are coppers who are out there on a power trip, but IMO this is becoming less of an occurrence and they're trained to develop relationships with the public and motorists, not alienate them for minor offences. A ticking off is normally all that is needed.

I would have thought the above a while ago - One guy over on the PSOOC forums who is a Police officer recently posted that they are having a big crack down on number plates, even on the spacing thing, think it impares how the cash machines work ....
