This May Be A Stupid Question...

  RB182cup&golf gti

some of those figures look a bit sus really, im sure an alfa 3.0V6 GTV would be quite a bit quicker than my cup.

In answer to the thread question which has been hammered id say the CTR but in real terms down to driver etc

Up until 100-110mph and its pretty close. Anything over that and the clio has no chance, a blip in the CTR rear view mirror.

Top speed wise, dont even go there!

Book top speed for clio is 137mph and book top speed of CTR is 147mph. Clio will go to around 146mph indicated, CTR will go off the 160mph clock.

Does anyone know the address of that site with the quarter mile race programe?

You pick two cars to race each other. They appear as dots, and thbey race across the screen, simulating the times. Clio cup is on there, civic probably as well. There was a link on this site before, might be an Audi site. Could never find it since.

My Dads got a CTR and the difference is noticable. Its a quicker car - though not much. Smoother and better build quality too. But its 5 grand more..

I love the blip comment lol. Is the speedo that bad top end? 13mph is pretty bad although I dont suppose youll be up there too often

Chris, the CTR will pull convincingly on a 172/182 when both reach for 5th gear. The 2.0 RS clios have no grunt in 5th, you dont need me to tell you that :oops:Who says anything about the speedo being out by 13mph? A CTR doing 160mph indicated will be around 152 real mph.

A CTR wouldnt do that to me or Chriss cars, just ask my pal with his Alfa 156 GTA who I just sat side by side with all the way from 80-125 actually eaking a bit at 90! (autobahn of course) Below 80 I was pushing him along :D

I caught the episode of Driven the other day where they compared the CTR with a 172 - the CTR won in all departments...I imagine it would against a 182 as well - but I still think the 182 is a great car for the money.

Driven is easy to watch, but they dont exactly know what makes a good performance car - didnt they collect a group of yobs for that episode, and let them decide which was best?

Hehehe no - they tested three cars on a bit of private road for acceleration, braking and turning circle! Im not saying they were right, thats just what they found.

  2005 Impreza WRX STI

ive drove a CTR just after stepping out of my 172 mk1. to around 80-90 they are about equal . but after that im convinced the ctr would pull away quite a bit!

  Yaris Hybrid

My mate has a CTR - its a pre facelift with AC (a bit of extra weight) and 43k on the clock so far better run in than my 3k 182. We have test driven each others cars and swapped cars and gone out on a drive.

Coming off of roundabouts the CTR cant keep up with the 182. You stir the box like crazy and can just about hang on, worth remembering the Clio has a higher power to weight ratio and a more flexible motor. At 80 the Clio stops pulling away. From a rolling start at 80 the CTR starts to slowly pull away as well. Talk of blips in mirrors is pure comic book fantasy but yes it is a bit quicker over 80 although it wouldnt pull back what its lost prior to 80mph and draw level until you get nearer 100.

The CTRs engine is very smooth and sounds very refined but the power and torque dont spread far enough down the range so you always have to do an extra gear change whereas the Clio driver can keep his foot to the floor.

I know you didnt ask about handling but it has to be mentioned. The CTR handles fine and has good grip but the weakness is its feel. Imagine sawing through the steering column on a 182 and thats what the CTR feels like. Completely disconnected from the wheels and no feedback - too much PAS? Probably fine on a track but when you are on a twisty and bumpy B road you dont have as much confidence as the car is not telling you whats going on. You just need to have faith....which as I say is fine on a track because you know whats coming when you get to each corner.

Its a nicer car to drive though in that its quieter, more comfortable and more refined than the Clio. Costs more though as his second hand model cost the same price as my new 182!!!

Reliability is a debatable issue. My car has had one failure - that being an emissions light that didnt affect the car in that it still ran fine. It just caused annoyance until Renault turned it off.

My mates CTR which is in fairness older has a headlamp height adjustment motor that is constantly making a noise like its on, both headlights are steamed up, the head unit had to be replaced and the rear wiper doesnt always work. In its favour the key survived being dropped in a washing up bowl, not sure a Renault key would!

Hes had the car about 6 weeks and text me last night saying he was thinking about a V6! Make of that what you like! Wouldnt put me off buying the new CTR if the new Clio is a let down though. If my 182 was written off after production stops I would still be quite happy getting a current CTR - although I havent driven face lift version.

Blip in the rear view was made by me, although i did state it would not happen until well over 100mph. Seeing as you never went above 100, i dont know how you can say its comical if you never tried it.

The CTR is very quick over 110mph, the clio is not, hence the blip in the rear view comment. Surely you know when its popped into 5th gear, its game over? Ive never driven the 182 but have driven the lighter mk1 172, i cant see there being that much difference.

Below 100 i would have thought the CTR being marginally quicker aswell. The published stats give the civic the edge. Different day, different driver, the outcome may have been the other way round.

The CTR has a fantastic engine and gearbox along with a nice interior and that would win it for me everytime when choosing between a CTR and a clio. You wont get called a girl when driving a CTR either;)

The CTR also holds it value better.

Never said we didnt go over 100, never said we did! Gotta be careful cos of the rules....

Clio accelerates very hard until about 120 when you have to put it into 5th. At that point it accelerates disappointingly slowly - thats when you need another 18bhp. I can say that I have never been over 120 in CTR though so cant compare them at those speeds. Maybe the CTR would pull away a lot at that point. At my local track (Castle Combe) you cant go much over 120 in 182/CTR. On public roads I dont go over 80mph anyway cos I need my licence/car for work.

Published figures in EVOs group test back up my experience of the cars. Clio was quicker to 60, they are about the same to 80 and the CTR is quicker to 100. Absolutely spot on from what I can tell. Clio is quicker over the standing quarter but the CTR has a higher terminal speed.

I wouldnt worry about what people would call you. At the end of the day we are are on about a Honda Civic and a Renault Clio, neither are what you would call sexy lmao!!!

Does a CTR hold its value better? Compared to list price then yes. Real world then no. A 3 year old CTR with AC and met paint can be picked up for 10k. Thats 7k less than new. A 3 year old 182 I reckon will be worth 6 or 7k, now given that most people pay £12.5 new....

*Totally off topic*

Mitchy, ill stick my neck out here and say my Cup would beat you to 100, 30-100, 30-70, 0-60 and stay side by side with your chipped R 100-125.

Discuss...;)

  Elise/VX220/R26

My experience of the CTR is that in a straight line they are quicker, by a reasonable margin. But in the real world the difference in speed is not going to be noticable. Obviously on the value for money side there is nothing that can touch a 182 or better still a 2nd hand 172. I do like CTRs but when you look at how much more they are than a 17/182 are they really worth it??

LOL Neil.

Your 14.2 is the equivelant of 14.5 down this neck of the woods (Pod) And i extremely doubt you run around with stripped interior and running on fumes for everyday use.

Having just sat on the bumper of an M3 from 3rd gear upwards to 150, i seriously doubt it mate. A chipped R has very good pull 3rd upwards. 1st and 2nd are difficult due to traction, however im sure a 6 sec 0-60 isnt out of reach. I also believe the jabba maps are much more agressive than the Revo maps due to a video of jabba vs revo i have on my computer:D

However im confident id be able to put the car in 4th gear at 30mph and still beat you to 100. 290lbft Low down torque and no gear change im confident id be in front.

Ive got another trick up my sleeve that will be revealed in a couple of weeks;)

Id be more than willing to travel a few miles to take on your R (u not coming back up this way anytime soon), I know from races with faster cars than yours that you would NOT be able to beat me 0-125. On a Dastek RR your car will make about 250-255 hp, trust me. Oh and 290lbft of torque for like 500 rpm lol oooo im scared.

OOOOH the banter;)

hehe, love the banter with Neil.

Ive had 237 and 240 measured @ wheels from 2 different RRs so id say that was pretty consistent. Using that 272bhp seems about right;)

It will be about 320hp/330lb this time in 2wks though;) Still want a blast Neil??

TBH the scottish road system is crap mate, well unless your heading south on the M74. Apart from the M74 i cant really think of an open 3 laned motorway in scotland. There are a couple of stretches round glasgow and edinburgh with 3 lanes but only for a short distance. Scottish roads are generally 2 laned which is crap for going high speed blasts.

We have had a lot of banter on here and it would be good to meet up for a friendly blast although i remember a time you were going to come to dundee to fill me in;). Your not going to bring a knife with you are you;)

Im up that way again for a christening in May, ill definitely meet up with you as im maybe under estimating your little beast. You may well keep up with me as after all it is a 1.8 hatchback and not a 4.0 V8 sports car. It will be interesting to see. Ive also got a planned meet with Ben (Vtec abuser) and he is going to film it as i have jabba, he has revo. We want an indication as to whats the better map, would solve a lot of bickering on SCN. Perhaps you can make a weekend of it too as we aint that far away in N.Yorkshire. Would be cool to film a LCR vs Clio vs LCR from a filming higher powered vehicle on the A1 very late at night. Sorry not the A1, the german autobahn;)
