Time to sell the Clio?

  Passat
I've got a 172 and I love it to bits. It's good enough on fuel for my liking and always puts a smile on my face. It's an 02 and knocking on a bit now though and I'm weighing up whether or not to get rid. I've found that any problems with it have always been ridiculously over complicated. I'm very much a novice mechanic so things like taking off a bumper to change a bulb are possible...but very annoying. I'm also based in Leeds, where it seems there are no non-dealer specialists - so it's a trip to Birchdown every time something mechanical goes wrong.

So after a bit of a look round at boring diesels and Mazda MPS's I'm still non the wiser as whats best to do. I've got £4.5k to spend and that's not even enough to get a good Fiesta Zetec S tdci. Depressing. Has anyone gone from a 172 straight to a 182 or is that the most ridiculous sidestep available? I love my car but it pains me to come on here and see how much better some of yours are.

Thanks for indulging my ramblings.

I wouldn't sell mine, its not worth very much and they make superb track cars ;)

Don't do it I made this mistake and after 6 months I was back in a Clio (I was also advised not to sell my first one)

Not to side track but why did you have to take the bumper off to change a bulb....?

4.5k is a great budget for the used hot hatch market!

Keep the Clio mate. I went from my 172 to a MPS and I regretted it within six months. The MPS is a great car, but its no where near as exciting as the Clio in my opinion.

spend a bit of money on the Clio, get it mint, do a few trackdays and fall in love with it again.

This tbh, I can't get a good replacement for the same price in the same condition/low miles so its pointless selling mine as much as I wan't to sometimes.

Have you considered a trophy as they are lovely cars and fairly cheap these days, you can also pickup 197's fairly cheap now.

To do the Xenon mate. I was changing the entire headlight unit too...so it all had to come off anyway.

I think I might keep an eye out for a mint 182 then. If anyone is selling one then is be very interested. I'd rather a quality 182 than an average 197 to be honest.

Cheers for the advice. I have these moments of indecision at times.

Ah right i see mate, if you still want a Clio and have that money to spend why not buy a Trophy? Nice examples can be had for well under 5k these days?

I've had a look at them but the better ones do seem quite dear. When you compare it to a top notch 182 at maybe £1500 less(?) I think I'd just go with the cheaper option. £4.5k was maybe my budget for a more reliable, more economic car. For a 182 I'd be looking around £3.5k. I'll keep my eyes trained on the 'For Sale' section.

I noticed in the op you said Mazda 3 mps. They may be more reliable than the clios but Jesus, they cost alot more to run! Sh*t mpg, eat expensive tyres, £400ish a year tax, more on insurance etc etc etc.

If you say you are happy with the economy of the clio and don't really need a car to be any better I would cross any diesel off your list.

I would just keep it and spend some money on it? Sounds like you maybe just want a change for the sake of it. I think everyone goes through them stages.

Flippo - I also considered getting rid of my clio for some thing that is more eco and better to drive, took test drives in golf GTD's or older GT TDi's to MX's to Audi A3's and A4's then Seat Leons and Ibiza's, the list was endless.

Yea stuff like the golf would achieve almost double MPG of my Clio around town but on the motorway it was only 10-20mpg more than the clio, depending on how I drive and I dont do motorways that much, the drive also felt boring to the point i was always yawning.

Anyhow, I got home and cleaned the car up and went for a blast down snake pass and over the hump, when I got home, I realised with the in car video how much fun I was having with just laughing at stuff and able to keep up with friends in their cars.

However, I am looking at buying a 1.9 DCi clio next weekend and keeping the 182!!

mine was 400 a year cheaper to insure than my 172. Which means even after the 450 quid tax, I was still 200 quid better over the year. In regards to tax and insurance anyway. But like you say, mpg and tyres are much worse than the clio
