To the good people out there.... (also gutted)

Keeping it short: coming home from work down the county lanes, it was wet and I was in 4th in the mid 40's. I'll freely admit I probably should have reduced to 30 but you don't expect the following.

Coming out from a corner some muppet in an MX-5 was parked to the side, his door WIDE open into the road with another car coming towards me.

In the style of Gordon Ramsey:
Break!
Swerve!
Break!
Aquaplane!
Gauze Bush!
Gauze Bush!
Tree!
Done.

Jumped out the car, looked at the guy 20 metres back and went to my car and waved down a work mate. Turned around and the guy in the MX-5 has turned around and driven off, thanks for nothing.

A big thanks to the the two cars who stopped and helped tow me out, car drives fine thank f**k.

not too bad, the gordon ramsey bit made me f**king laugh! (in the style of gordon ramsey)

  mini cooper (RIP 172)
could of bee worse by the luck of it! but still not good!

i'd say

find new bonnit
get it sprayed
fit it
DONE!!

love the Gordon Ramsey bit;)

I sometimes wonder whether it's worth swerving or just better to hit them. My brother got cut up by somebody, he hit the kerb avoiding them and wrote his car off. The other person stopped but he refuses to give insurance details because he wasn't involved in an accident according to him. I would have beaten him with the first part of my car I happened to pick up off the road.

Thanks guys, I was lucky, glad I can joke about it, half a foot to the left and Id have probably failed in ploughing down a rather large tree.

For a split second I'm sure I considered taking his door off!

Rob's172 I'm a bit skint so its:

Take off Bonnet
Hammer
T-Cut
Done.

  AMV8, Mk1 Golf
in past experience i swerved and ended up taking out a laspost (slightly different situation)
now id hit it... although brain would probably make me swerve everytime..

Its difficult to weigh up the options in these situations. I have had many crashes now, around 6 in my older cars, and each time before I have crashed my brain has mentally calculated where the damage will be and how much it will cost, and also gone someway to weighing up the options i had in terms of directions to take etc. However I reckon instinct takes over

As the Institute of Advanced Motorists teaches, always drive so you can stop on your side of the road within the distance you can see to be clear ;) lol :rasp:

But yeah, overestimating braking ability is easily done! Done it myself enough times :S lol

Quick trick should you lock up in a non-ABS car and need to steer:

Staying locked up on the brakes, steer to the direction you want to go. Then come off the brakes and the tyres should bite into the surface (cross your fingers lol) and take you away from what you were going to hit.

Done it myself a couple of times - if you can't stop in the distance you have, look for an escape route and steer towards it, coming off the brakes at a point that gives the tyres a chance to bite before you hit something! :)

Of course, you then have to deal with staying on the road itself, avoiding things coming the other way, the risk of the back end breaking loose if you have crap tyres on there... lol But it should at least mean you don't smack someone up the arse and get your insurance caned for 2 claims!

Yeah I'll admit, should have expected the un-expected.

White16valver, some good advice, think I need to find a nice wet airfield to try it on first though :)

FM-AVA-696, lol perhaps but the badge kind of covers the nice ding!

AlexS was going from Knoll Beach (studland) towards the chain ferry, a nice fast road, think I'll be treating it differently from now on though..

Think I took the best option looking back (saying that I think I was more passenger than driver), it was hit the stationary MX-5 or a very old car head on, I'll settle for front end damage, myself safe and my no claims intact :)

On a plus note did my bit for the environment destroying those gauze bushes!

thought it was going to be worse after reading your dissertation on the incident?

Don't worry I'll take his door off next time, bounce of into the head on whilst destroying as much gauze as possible ;)

Probably wouldn't have gone on so much if the twunt hadn't left the scene, my humble apologies guess it was a 'you had to be there moment'..

People are bloody stupid on that bit of road too... especially the cyclists/pedestrians...

Absolutely ridiculous. Sorta similar story for me the other day, was coming along this road (50) which passes a crematorium. This women walked straight out of the gates onto the road. Was behind a 206CC, he slammed his breaks on by the time i'd started breaking it was obvious i was going into the back of him so i without thought swung into the left hand lane. We both stopped looking at each other as this woman proceeded to cross the road. It wasn't till after that i thought f**k me, what if someone had been coming down the left hand lane. I got away lucky that time. . .

Sorry to hear whats happend, thats a right b**ch. Could of been worse, glad you and the car are ok.

Unlucky mate, the guy in the MX-5 is obviously a w**k of huge proportions! Not a pleasant experience for you i should imagine but at least your still roadworthy, did you see the mess i made of my Cup?
