towbars

  Vauxhall Astra SRi 2.0
my clio had towbar wen i bought i toke that s**t straight off was never gna be towing so its in the scrapyard now :rasp:

  RenaultSport clio 172 mk2
I need to tow occasionally for things like taking rubbish down to the dump and bringing things home that are too big to fit in the back. The dealer that incorrectly and illegally fitted the towbar was only willing to take it off and refund my money, but that would have left me worse off, I wouldn't have been able to tow. So I left it fitted even though its technically illegal to tow anything with it. So I hope I don't have a crash with a trailer on, and if I do no-one realises other Clios can legally tow but the 173 can't, and if they do I can plead that the dealer fitted it so I assumed it was legal, which was true, then.

The insurance company wouldn't care, it's your responsibility to make sure its legal, they just wont pay up and they'll be nothing you can do about it.

I could do with one for towing a small trailer, my car will tow 800 kg braked or so it says in the owners manual. What would they be from a scrapyard and i just wondered if all the electrics are on the car already so it will just plug in.
Thanks

What was unhelpful was Renault being unwilling to say why they approve and supply a towbar for the rest of the Clios, but not on a 172. Its not the rear structure. The standard Clio towbar bolts in. The car's got more power. Its got better brakes. Would the weight of a trailer somehow interfere with the correct/safe operation of the ABS or ESC?

They didn't type approve it as its not the brand imgae they want to portray Skoda fabia VRS is the same. the Seat Ibiza even though its the same car etc is type approved.

The clutch is another isue on 172's as its not that good same for the engine and gearing its not ideal.
