Tracing An IP Address?

  clio 1.8 16v
Hi all

Have an ip address i need to trace the origin of, any ideas how i can tell where the computer it belongs to is located??

many thanks

  Fabia vRS
post the address and i'll have a look at what i can find from it.

at the end of the day, if it's just an address from an isp's dynamic range then the chances are slim.

even if it's a fixed IP you may only be able to trace it to a town at best.

spray.net = lycos? ^_^

i'm limited at work to what i can do on these PC's :(

ignore the "ripe.net" bit.

ripe just provided internet resource allocations and registration services etc..

If you need to report abuse of any of the IPs, use the details above.

Closest you can get is town at a very push. But IP info isn't always accurate. My IP shows I'm in notts. Think it goes by the proxy you connect through anyway

True, it goes by where you are connecting though I'd have thought, i.e. my ISP is around Exeter so it thinks I'm in Exeter.

any way of getting an address of where the computer is?

Nope, not yourself. It'll show the contact address for the company responsible for the range of addresses, regardless of where the computer itself is. It may not even show the country where the computer is, e.g. most/all AOL addresses list their US address, even those allocated to UK customers.

The only people who will be able to find out where the customer's computer is are the ISP themselves, if the person has wronged you in some way then contact the abuse/NOC address of the ISP in question and let them deal with it, if you think what they've done will be against the ISP's T&C's, or illegal. And if it is illegal, you could try contacting the Police too!
