Tracking Advantages

  Was a Clio 1.8 16v

Is tracking simply lining the wheels and steering wheel in a perfect straight position?

Or, does it help reduce uneven tyre wear or balance and therefore handeling of the car?

I thought it just made your steering wheel in line with the direction of the wheels, but someone i know suspects otherwise. Any imput? Cheers.

Ok, if your tracking is out in a big way it will improve the cars handling when its fixed to what it should be, but if its only slightly out then the chances are you wont really notice a difference. But it will prevent uneven tyre wear and other related problems that could get you failing an mot becuase of a lack on track on the inside of the wheel you cant see.

The steering wheel part is half correct. If your wheels are not tracked correctly and your steering wheel doesnt point straight up when the wheels are straight, then getting the car tracked properly will probably fix this. But if your wheels are off track and your steering wheel is striaght then when the car is re-tracked properly your steering wheel wont be pointing straight up when the wheels are straight.

If that makes any sense at all.

tracking is important....but generally, in most cars you cant change anything but toe......

Front toe has a big effect on high and low speed cornering and striaght line stability, rear toe has a big effect on the amount of oversteer and slip angle.

Manufaturer setting s are usually the best for general use as messing about with it wihtout the ability to change the rest of the geometry.

lowering also affects static geometry.
