Transmission - help!

Ive got a kind of whining coming from the nearside front of the car, which goes when I dip the clutch (into neutral). Its not a wheel bearing - I need a new one of those anyway and that makes another noise!

It comes from about 30mph on, but it doesnt matter which gear Im in (so unlikely to be a worn gear). Its difficult to describe, but sounds like a light grinding noise and gets worse when Im off-throttle. So if I accelerate, even slightly, it gets quieter.

What could this be? A driveshaft? Synchromesh? Help!

Cheers - is that expensive?

Can I use the car for another 1000 miles or so? Or is that suicidal?

Just dug out the Haynes manual and it would definitely be an engine out job if this is the case!!

you can keep using it to a point but the noise will just get louder.to change the bearings it would req the gearbox removing and completly stripping.might be more economical to find a recon gearbox.

Cheers

Its a bit crap really as the Willy gearbox is meant to be tougher than the 16V one, yet my 16V one was fine when I sold it at 105k miles. The Willy has 57k miles!

If it costs more than £600 to fix the box alone (ex-labour), then I hear Renault can supply a brand new Willy box for about that price?
