I personally haven’t because I’ve gone another route. Is there a problem buying from him then?

You’re obviously on cliotrophy forum so a quick recap of the 2 current Sachs topics shows NOBODY on the forum (that has posted up) has bought any of him because of his questionable payment procedure.

Like i said, I can’t comment on that and I wasn’t previously aware there was a problem as when I contacted him we didn’t get as far as talking payments.

However he can’t be the only person on the planet that can buy/supply these dampers.
With all due respect, they get talked about like they’re some sort of holy unobtanium.

No doubt they take a bit of work sourcing them, but surely far from impossible and the way the prices of them get talked up, itS like we’re dealing in 250 GTOs here.

I had a new Sachs damper for one side, Unused and un fitted and the problem with it was they you could see as clear as day that the rubber o-ring was perished.
If these seals and rubber o-rings have been on the dampers from new this would indicate they have not been touched or changed in 15years and they will be cracked and perished.
In my eyes the damper would then need a strip down, change of o-rings, seals, new gas / liquid and im guessing off the top of my head thats going to be a couple of hundred to have done.

This is well worth taking into consideration when buying new units that have been sitting around for years untouched or unused.

I purchased a set recently from here that needed refurbishing sent to them to BG and were freshly powder coated, and new seals and fine tuned. Turned out a much better option than a new unknown set that had been sitting around for a while that needed a rebuild anyway.

I won the auction for these. Bought in the full knowledge of the above.

Spares are getting harder and harder to come by all the time- can't get any of the springs or dampers new any more. If there's ever an issue with the major components (shaft notwithstanding) on my original dampers then I'd be up s**t creek. I see this more as insurance for the future.

At the time of the group buy on the clio trophy forum I was in no financial position to get them so if other owners ever want a spare unused set then they're going to have to take the opportunities when they come IMO.

Shafts can be replaced as Sachs have stock.

They other thing that is very very thin on the ground is the actual damper unit itself.

Last time I was getting info I know one side of the dampers was discontinued from Sachs. This was the actual unit including spring cup.

If you damage the spring cup of the unit is Porous then you might find it hard to get them from Sachs.

I’m thinking about getting mine refurbished by Cornering Force.

Have emailed them for a price so will see what they come back with.

From Jane at BG Motorsport to me the other day-

We do strongly recommend having the struts powdercoated now providing they are in a good enough condition to withstand the process as we can no longer get new outer struts from Sachs.

@gambit

Got this quote from cornering force earlier this week.

The standard service is a full strip, clean, rebuild and dyno test to
balance. We use new seals, oil and new top sliding bush.

The cost is £354 inclusive of VAT and return courier.

Additionally we can blast and powder the cases on top of the standard
service - total cost £474 (again fully inclusive)

We also make and fit a supplementary wiper seal to keep the dirt out of the
very vulnerable main shaft seal (photo attached) - this is an additional £54
per damper (again inc VAT).
