Turntables

  Revels Mum & Sister
Anyone here with a Hifi setup running a turntable still? I am not talking 1210's or anything like that.

I fancy buying one as I love the sound of vinyl. Was looking at the Pro-ject any suggestions £200-300 tops

I don't as I still have my 1210's but the Pro-ject turntables are very good. Personally I would get the one with the USB connection as you get the preamp/soundcard and software to transfer vinyl to your PC, as well as it doubling as a normal turntable for your hifi with decent interconnects!

I used to work in HI-Fi and ran a Michelle Orbe. The Project turntables where fantastic for the money especially when used with a wuality phono stage! Whats the rest of your kit?

Project Debut's are fine value for money, I borrowed one recently:

But for a few hundred you'll be able to get a Rega, which have more upgrade potential later.

I remember you have Naim stuff? I can't recall which models to know if they include a phono stage. External ones are generally better anyway, so budget for that too.

Not interested in turning vinyl into MP3.

Sold the Naim stuff, at the moment I have a Cambridge Audio 640A and 640C with some B&W 385 Standmounts.

Will try and get a listen to some Rega stuff and the Pro-ject audio.

The Rega and Pro-Ject both have very different sounds, with the equipment you are using at the moment the Rega will probably be the nicer sounding one IMO.

Cool will give them a bash cheers for the advice never really bothered with a Turntable

Rasclart, do you have a large collection of vinyl or is it just for playing around?

I only have a few LPs but it was amazing what the most entry level player - the Debut - could do; even compared against my Copland CDP.

Will it just be "to play some old records"?

Or are you looking to get into it?

What would be the CD:LP ration of playing?
How come you sold the Naim? Didn't like the PRat?
If you did like the "Naim sound" then Rega is considered "PRaTy" too.

I was listening to a ClearAudio deck at a friend's recently and all in below £1k was a serios challenge to a £3k Moon CDP:

I know you jested about the "SL1210", but it is well-built and can perform well with a "hifi" arm and cartridge:

I got the Numark USBTT, can link it through the phono leads to your hi-fi or through the comp via usb. and it was £150. Very worth it as its versatile.

Yes, but a 1210 would do more than a good job compared to a hi fi turntable!!!

a 1210 would NOT do a good job as a hifi turntable! I have tried it so many times in various setups including mounting a Roxan Tabriz Tonearm with Dynavector Cartridge and spending similar money on a HiFI turntable is MUCH better!

As I said at the start of this thread, i used to run a Michlle Orbe, SME V, used various cartridges and finally settled on the Dynavector XX2. Used this in conjuction with a Naim setup, Naim Stage line, Nac82 with Supercap, 2 x Nap 135 and Shahinian Arc speakers! My point is, I know a bit about turntables and hifi systems!

It is an interesting point though.

The term "snake oil" is often used in hifi circles where prices are bumped up just because a product is "audiophile". A good example I've seen of this was from an eBay seller: he sold granite chopping boards for £15, and then when he discovered people were using them in their hifi he re-advertised them "isolation platforms" and sold them at £90.

My point is that with something like a 1210 you're getting more for your money in terms of parts and build, but hifi can often seem illogicial when you're not into it.

I've become increasing cynical about CDPs in particular with a moving shift towards PC-based sources. The £15,000 Naim CD555 only uses a $200 Philips transport. Whereas an expensive TT seems to consist of some quality engineering and parts. Well... except for LP12s ;) ;)

Anyway... I've gone off on a tangent and you won't go far wrong with a Project Debut, and if you enjoy it maybe look at something more fancy next year.

CDPs are a completely differently thing, and that $200 Philips transport isnt the same as the one you can buy for $200! I know, I've seen these being built ;)

I know what you mean about people thinking something is better than it is because of the price tag, but I worked in the trade for a number of years and like to think I can tell the difference.

Ahh, god bless Vinyl.

Sadly, my Rega turntable is in my Dad's loft as I don't have space for it now.:(

I still rememeber the day when I compared my £200 T/table to a £1000 CD Player and the turntable :slap: all over the CD player. Ggiven the right source material of course.

I must have 100 Albums in the loft that are just standing there (3 years and counting).

To be honest 90% at the moment would be CD's. I just fancy trying Vinyl. hence the low initial outlay as I may tire easily of it.

I loved the Naim but needs must and all that plus the room it was in wasnt ideal and hence it didnt really get played very much. Hence I sold it.

I wasnt expecting to be impressed with the Cambridge Audio stuff I guess i was a bit snobby after the naim kit but I was blown away for the sound for the MONEY totally different sound to the Naim obviously.

I dont wanna spend a hefty wedge on a turntable at the moment as I may grow bored of it. so 150-200 TOPS for now would do the job.

I have heard good thingd about the CA phono stage and its pretty cheap but again I havent ever dipped my toe here either......

Want to have a listen to a Goldring GR2 as well

I wasnt impressed with goldring, looked and felt cheap. for your budget you really cant go wrong with a Pro-Ject Debut PHONO, which has the project phono stage built in which is normally (or was anyway) £40 seperately!

  Revels Mum & Sister
I fully see what you mean with the Goldring I wasnt impressed.

I bought a CA Phono Stage, took it to Seven Oaks and had a listen to the Pro-ject 3 and the phone one you recommended. For me the sound with the CA phono stage was better. So I bought the Pro-ject expression 3. Very happy with it for the money

The Project expression 3 is a better deck than the debut phono. didnt realise you had opted for the CA phono stage! just need to start enjoying some records now then ;) Best thing is to get a decent cleaning brush for the records such as the goldring carbon fibre one. If you have some that need a deeper clean than there is a spray on product you cant get but the name escapes me at the moment.

  Revels Mum & Sister
I have purchased the Goldring brush. I have seen the spray but not really needed at the moment. Enjoying the laid back sound of vinyl

  Revels Mum & Sister
Agree with that, I have the 12" vinyl version and CD version of the editors. Much prefer the Vinyl. CD sound isnt bad but for me vinyl wins.

Next step Squeezebox and DAC ;)

wouldnt bother with a DAC as I found the CA cd player to be poor when used as just a transport. Would just buy a better CDP.

I have Pearl Jam Ten on cd and vinyl and the vinyl version is FAR supperior! Makes CD sound like a MP3

  Revels Mum & Sister
Wont be using the CDP with a DAC, I plan to run the Squeezebox through the DAC with Loseless files.

The DAC in question isnt an expensive one and seems to be well looked upon as a really good VFM product as well

...but it's not always as simple as the vinyl is better than the CD.

It's more likely that the CDs are often poorly mastered for the mainstream :(

You'd be better off putting the vinyl on CDR in some cases!

just no. Vinyl is technically better than CD. like for like and all things being equal (same master etc) the record player will give a better reproduction than a cd player
