Tyre failure/fault or am I unlucky?

I've been running this set of Yokohama Advan AD08s since July, have covered 7.5k miles including 3 trackdays, very impressed with them so far.

I'm at Rentech this morning for a service, and Dave spotted this...

I'm struggling with what's caused this? If it were a simple puncture/penetration I wouldn't expect it to remove a chunk of the tread leaving tyre cords visible.

Any thoughts?

I'm just impressed to hear that some 'track day' tyres have lasted so long..

Looks similar to the damage I got when I ran over the base of a broken glass bottle, not deep enough to puncture but took a lump out of the tyre.
