Tyres for the track

F&B

I've been reading through the tyre poll and it's clear there are lots of different opinions on what's good/bad!

So similar to the tyre poll I'm after people's experiences on tyres, but this time for the track *only* i.e. not bothered how they operate on the road I'm just really keen to hear what tyres work well when being subjected to the pounding a track day gives them.

Currently have Yoko A539s on my road wheels which I've found miles better recently just by dropping the pressures down 3 psi from standard all round, but don't know whether a second set of these on my track wheels would be up to the task? My standard fit Contis on my track wheels seemed pretty good.

Also interested to hear if any 172 drivers have gone from 195 to 205 width on the track - is it worth it (logic says it is - bigger contact patch)?

Thanks

Yoko Prada's?

Were great on the Nurburgring and surrounding roads, need heat like all fast road/track tyres.

A539's rock on track.

They're progressive at their limits, and when they do start to move about, it's all very calm as it happens.

I ran 3 or 4 sets of these on road and track in my fisrt 18 months with the car - not once did I ever lose a treadblock or did they do anything other than wear well and evenly.

The tread pattern, which is quite wide gap widths, and not overly complicated, means the temperatures don't get too high.

Compare that with Michelin PE2s for example, where I've seen several sets with their shoulder's tread blocks torn off from being on track...terrible!

Plus they're very cheap.

Don't run them when it's damp or wet though.

If you like a sprited drive id avoid exaltos, ive melted several sets.
Great road tyres, did many a ring trip (but thats not as demanding as a track by any means, brakes yes but tyres no)

GSD3's are great road tyres but come unstuck on track so avoid those.

539's or Parada's and its worth jumping up to 205 full stop.

R888's are a smidge hardcore and are less progressive as a road tyre.
