Unwanted text messages!

I have a new Vodafone contract and new number which I got just before Christmas. As soon as I turned the thing on I got a XXX message from a number. I keep getting them and I don't know whether I am being charged yet. I don't want to text back "stop" as this may cost. Is there a way of barring a number or blocking it as it is always the same?
I know I could just ring Vodafone but I want to see if there is a simple way!

id have done stop first thing wots £1.50 compaird to £1.50 ur prob being charged for every text
