Upgrade from Bilstein B14s - BCs? Much difference in DS/BR?

  172 Turbo
Going to upgrade the coilovers on my Clio, are BCs a good enough upgrade? And is there much difference between the new digressive valve model and the old ones?

No one got an opinion on them? Are owners of the older spec coilovers happy with them on track?

I’m surprised no one has an opinion.. if it’s any help I’m running B14 with custom spring rates and slightly altered damping and I still think about going for something like the newer BC for UK tracks.. but for the road stuff and the ring the B14 will be hard to beat. I’d be interested in seeing opinions for the new BC

I have the older BR's as they were the only option available at the time and now I have the right spring rates fitted (originally the fronts were to soft) they are great on track, I personally don't need anything more as all im doing is 1 track day a month over the summer months. So for the £680 I paid at the time, I couldnt be happier with them tbh.

I'm guessing you mean DR not DS.

100% go for the DR, better valving all round.

The older BR valving can be quite crashy because the valve dampening can't keep up.

What’s considered a good spring rate front and rear with the DR a mate is going to order up a set for his 182, mainly track stuff but doesn’t want it too stiff for road use. I’m on 550lb with the B14 on the front and that’s nice..

I've got the older BR's with 7kg/8kg, only used to drive to the track and around it, works very well.

Sorry for the late reply. I've been at Le Mans.
The DR has now changed name to DS series (just to clarify any confusion)
They are similar technology as the Bilsteins , but with the advantage that we can specify firmer spring rates. Much better quality internally than the older BR design. The rear can go lower than the Bilstein too so better for stripped out cars.
The big advantage Bilstein have though is their corrosion protection.
For a track only car I wouldnt go softer than the 9kg

I have BC DS from kamracing on my clio 182, with 9kg front/8 kg rear , they are superb on track! I also have the Whiteline RARB and ACS MOTORSPORT roll centre and bump steer kit and they help the suspension a lot!

How much was your set up in total mate?
Concidering this exact set up on my track 172 over the winter.

For reference i have BC DR coilovers with the adjustale top mounts, PMS 19mm RARB and Mark’s @NorthloopCup Roll Centre correction Kit and i have to say the whole package transforms the car. I have 6kg front and 8kg rear springs as it is a road car first and foremost. The car feels totally connected now, response is amazing with ride being better than standard on full soft but much more composed. The other advantage is that you can have this whilst it being dropped on the deck which i also love from a “stance” perspective. Total cost is around £1700 which is a lot but the difference in driving experience is night and day.

Thanks boosted , that's a ton o money for my tracks at that I'd be using maybe 6 or 7 times a year!
Think the car cost about that ?
Probably do it in stages to ease the cost over the winter, what made the biggest difference do you think?

No worries. It would be hard to extrapolate which part has made the biggest difference as i had them all installed together. In terms of the coilovers i would say that it has tied down the car, with it feeling tauter, brushing off bumps as well as the standard setup, whilst being in a different league when you up the pace. The roll centre kit improves the steering feel and gives you much more confidence on turn in amongst its other well documented “talents” on track which i’m not yet qualified to answer. The PMS RARB makes the rear a lot more lively reducing roll, keeping the car flat through bends. To summarise the entire package sharpens an already very able chassis, removing the slack whilst still being comfortable and composed on the road which was exactly what I wanted.

Ran BC’s, 8/8kg for the last 3 years now.....cracking suspension for the money I’d say. A little harder on the front needed for track only running proper Tyres!
I also run northloop roll centre kit, PMS rear anti roll bar, solid top mounts and gripper diff’d box (also from northloop cup)......awesome handling package ?
May upgrade to AST’s for next year but that’s a big step up in cost

Thanks.
It's good to hear from people who have tried the heavier front springs too.

Defo going to go with coilovers and probably 9 or 10 kg spring rate the roll centre kit and a full geo set up to at least get the best from that then go from there.
