urgent mk2 clio help....please

  ph2 172
i meant mk1 i apologise!! sisters car failed mot and she decided to tell me that it needs to be sorted by tommorrow, wench. anyway the headlight adjusters dont work, and the ball and socket just pop off when you adjust them manually, the actual adjuster thats linked to the dial in the car is connected by two pipes no electrics or anything they look like they run on water somehow, quote me if im wrong but when i removed the pipes water came out, basically does anyone know how they work as its doing my head in and i need to get it done asap.

huh? the adjusters are electrical not water operated! you unplugged something else.

well these things have a ball which connect into a socket on the back of the headlight adjuster so cant think what else they could be, no electrical connectors anywhere for either side,, if you pull the pipe off the end of them water dribbles out and there is a metal bit on them that slides in the pipe, weird as, just two pipes that run to the back of the headlight adjuster which has a bulky black bit on the back of it. anyone shed some light (no pun intended)

Can you post a pic of what you are looking at?

The headlight adjuster does not have pipes going into it. Only an eletrical plug with a couple wires.

The adjuster cable feeds through from the dial under the steering wheel (afaik?) - therefore when you twist it it should pull the cable (if it is cable operated) and move the ball thing and, hence, the internals of the light (when the ball is clipped into the plastic thing on the light).

I've no idea why you have water in yours!!

Why do you need the adjuster connected anyway? If the lights are correctly aligned then the MOT man has no need to adjust them or look under the bonnet. In a worst case scenario, you can kind of adjust them by undoing the screws on the top that secure the light unit and moving the whole unit till it's correct...

without the adjuster clipped into place when you manually adjust it pops out of the ball and socket and without it in place the internals of the light are to loose, the place where she had the mot done are tw@s she only went cause it cheap, being a bit tight

sorry mate, hopefully somebody who has worked on a mk1 will know how they are connected. Im out of ideas. I thought the mk1's were electrical like the mk2's.

how far does that white nipple extend out?

about 8mm its ridged aswell like a water connector is. never come across anything like this before ruddy french bet theres bet the tyres are filled with onions and garlic and berets and all things french. cheers mrmark anyway, i know what your saying about them all being electrical thats what i thought.

I would swear that they are just cable operated!!

If the adjuster doesn't work from inside the car then make doubley sure the ball things are connected to the plastic things on the light and try again - if it still doesn't work then not sure what to suggest...

dont know if they are cable operated i dont know how the hell a cable would work you have to pull on the ball at the end with some force for it to pull out it feels like theres a strong return spring inside it or a vacuum. the water that comes out the pipes is very blue like windscreen wash really, traced the pipes back to make sure they werent connected to the washer but there not, haynes manual is rubbish, very vague.

hi mate ive played with a few of them it could be cable or it will be air poperaited so if there is a split in the pipe ne where it wont work and it mite suck water in from the road if you cant get it workin you should be able to pull the ajuster out abit to get the aim up or push to get it down then put it back in the light

air operated sounds like the kiddy nice to shed some light on it. looked under the bonnet and one of the pipes had broke off so went got an adjuster from scrapyard and re terminated the adjust all connected up but still they dont work, do they take a feed from the inlet or something or how do they work?

just found this "They are actuated hydraulically with a special anti-freeze type solution. Problem is this tends to leak out, and the entire unit needs to be replaced (cannot be refilled). In my opinion this is likely to cost more to sort out than the benefit you'll get from it. But if this has left your headlights too dipped I believe you have to remove the actuators (they remove a bit like a bayonet light bulb) and use a screwdriver in the hole vacated to adjust them up" makes sense now, gonna just have to find a way of holding the light in the right place now without the adjusters, oh and it was from a skoda forum. figures really

if you can find a clio with manual ajuster you can change them over and do away with all the crap
