V8 Supercars Abu Dhabi

I did a driving experience in one of these bad boys at rockingham, was overtaking ferrari's, it was awesome

Nice spin at 6:00! Those track facilities and stands put most British circuits to shame. Incredible the amount of money that must have been thrown into constructing that.

Also liking the idea of the plate bolted perpendicular to the right side of the accelerator peddle, I'd like to try that.

Why does he keep left footing the brake? Is it to keep them warm, or is his foot itchy?

I wondered that. I thought he might be cleaning the brakes before a heavy application, but a couple of times he did it before a couple of corners which required little braking. Perhaps just a nervous tick!

It settles the pads against the disks.

I always thought that was to reset the pads.

Edit: Watched the video then read the comments, beaten to it.

to bring the pads back up closed to the discs, bacuse if the distance between to brae zones is pretty long pads will settle back more

These are chevrolet V8's, a little down on power compared to the real deal which raced last weekend. Still some good in-car action though!

Guys,

Thanks for all the comments, I was the one posting the video and spotted this forum on one of the stats pages.

As has been said, the "brake tap" is to avoid "pad knock off" which is where the pad settles and/or gets "knocked back" a little as you run the curbs. It just makes sure the pad is primed ready for when you need the brakes.

I am driver coach for Raed and a couple of the other guys in this series, I also occasionally work at Rockingham as an instructor so get to sit alongside you guys when you drive em ... not sure which is more scary, the race drivers driving or you guys :)

They are awesome bits of kit though, totally un-sophisticated and not like the Aussie cars at all, probably costing just a tenth of the build cost. Main problem is that they are too soft and lack camber.

We've just had another race weekend at Abu-Dhabi where Raed was again in the wars. Qualified 2nd but overheating issues meant the best he could do in Race 1 was 4th. In Race 2 he was involved in a hi-speed crash at Turn 2 on lap 1. As ever we have the onboard video, not just from Raed's car but also the car of one of my other drivers Abdulaziz Al-Yaeesh who was directly behind when it happened. Both video also have 1/2 speed and 1/4 speed slo-mo's of the incident.

It's an interesting sequence and has been the subject of much debate as to who was at fault.

There are loads more onboards from these V8s and various other cars in races and on trackdays on my Youtube channel.

Loads more to come also, the next V8 race is in Bahrain in 2 weeks supporting the F1 GP and then back to Zain Reem in Saudi Arabia for the last round.

Now I know you guys are here I will pop by from time to time, have worked with a number of the Clio guys, Phil Glew, Ben Winrow, Ed Pead etc.

looks like they can't navigate off camber corners, or are just retarded?

Also if there were a gravel pit at the end of those straights they would be f**ked! no one would be racing!

Agreed on the circuit misfit, as a race driver for 20 years I think tarmac runoffs are just ridiculous. If we MUST use them for racing/qualifying then have a rule that says if you run all 4 wheels off the circuit then you are black flagged. That being said I think we would have struggled for a top 3 in the above race.

Bit harsh on the retarded comment :) the sand was a real problem, it's not just when you drive over it that its a problem, it stays on the tyres for a good few 100 metres and can reduce grip by around 75%.

It was so inconsistent as it just blows across the circuit and its there one minute and not the next. They hoovered it for the main races (GP2/Aussie V8s/F1).

The cars are already hampered by running near stock suspension with no camber. Slicks need camber as once you get "into" the corner you are only using about 1/3 of the tyres width as opposed to having all of it available on turn in.

Marshals report all unenforced "four wheels off" incidences so stewards can take action if they see fit. Copse at silverstone is another example. Stand down there on btcc day and watch how many use the runoff - they should put the gravel trap back IMO.

Just found this one from onboard an MX5 I raced. Check the guy out on the far left on the exit of Copse, he's that far off track he's almost in a different county !!

You're probably not far wrong. IIRC half of Silverstone is in Fcukinghamshire and the other half in Northants.
