valver oil temp?

  RenaultSport 172.
noticed after about 20 mins of driving my valver the oil gets very very warm...

as i bought the car only last week not too sure when it last had an oil change...if its getting warm quick, does this simply mean its in need of an oil change or is there more i should be concerned about?

regards
Rage

If you can tell us what sort of temperature its runnign we can tell you if its ok or not. My hybrid goes to about 100 degrees at the very highest which is only after driving it very hard. General driving about town is about 80 degrees and motorway driving it sits about 90 degrees.

Still shouldn't be going to 120c though. I'd try an oil/filter change and see what happens, some oils get hotter than others.

yeah...well the chap i bought it off told me it had been standing for 3 months as it ran out fo tax...maybe something i should do anyway wether it solves the problem or not...hopefully it should solve it...

120 isn't anything to worry about, it depends on the grade of the oil. My mates used to goto 140 degrees which imo is on the high side, but again, 20k miles a year for about 3-4 years and it's still absolutely fine on 5w 40 fully synth oil. It's on 130k miles now and going strong.

mine runs at 100 when been driven hard and out and about 80-90 and i have got 10w40 semi synthetic oil in it! 120 does seem a little i reckon you should do a oil and filter change and engine flush it at the same time !

Btw are you definately reading the gauge correctly? Its just that you could easily mis-read it because where the 100 is written on the dial you it can be a bit misleading. 90 degrees is exactly half way round the dial.
