Very worried please help.

I need some advice. My car has done 10k and I aint had it serviced or anything because the book says that it should be done every 18,000 miles. But I spoke to someone today who says that you are supposed to do a 6,000 miles check up?? Is this right.

Thanks

personally, id take it to a trusted local mechanic for an oil change

18k is a rediculous amount of time for service intervals, IMO

when i was in Renault the other day, a fella from VW was in chattin to one of the blokes, exchanging business cards etc, they were asking each other what the service intervals were like on there brand of cars, each of them agreed that they were good as a selling point but terrible for the engines

No, first one is 18000 miles, OR 2 years old. For the renault sport range the first is 12000 miles.

cris is right. I took my first Clio to its 6k/6 month check up as instructed and all they did was over inflate one of the tyres!!!!

When I picked up my next new Clio from the showroom I said "6 month check same as last time?" and they said "nope we dont do that anymore".

No doubt you check your oil and brake fluid levels etc on a regular basis anyway.

Most of the Mk1s had a service (i.e. oil change) at 6k for petrols and 5k for diesels. The latest Mk2s have them every 18k for mainstream models. My mum and bro picked up a 1.2 Dynamique the other day and were told 18k miles, to which I said but what about oil degredation? Seems thats not an issue these days, but it makes me very suspect! My Williams oil was black by 6k miles!

Most people wouldnt have a clue to check their coolant and brake fluid levels, let alone some of the more complicated procedures! To be fair, they do say 18k OR 1 year (the sooner of the two), but its still a hell of a lot of miles for tyres, brakes, oil etc if you assume complete novice-ness on behalf of the buyer.

Williams loves oil tho, heh..

18k is a long time tho.. altho, only 1 1/2 years if you do average miles (12k a year).. so not overly bad..

Well Ive just changed the oil, bit late I know but Im no mechanic. Tyres have all been replaced due to punctures and me getting f**ked off with them and wiper fluid has been replaced. Dont suppose anybody would mind telling me what else I should do now that Ive done 10k would they? Cheers for the help by the way.

good work mate, you can do it any harm by changin the oil at 10k, in my eyes you can only do good, there is no way on this earth i would leave oil in a car, any car, for 18k

id jus check the condition of the air filter, maybe pop a spark plug out see if thats in decent condition, thatll probably be fine though as they probably use platinum plugs now for longer life

To be honest mate, I aint got a clue what to do. Ive got a job at Saab starting in August so Im going to have to learn basic things like that. What do you reckon is the best way to learn?

when i bought mine i changed the plugs to bosch plus 4, the air filter to a k &n high flow and i change the oil and filter myself every 5000 miles. save quite a bit of money doing it that way.

Is it easy to change plugs and air filter?? Oil was a piece of piss to check and do but I dont want to mess about with the engine in case i break it.

My car is just goin on 8600, 53 plate 1.2 16v dynamique, regd oct 03, could i just take it to renault to service it now or do i have to wait till its done 18k?

Cheerz, Alan.

I would have it serviced once a year. The thing about lower mileage cars is that their mileages are often run up on short trips, which accelerates oil degradation.

If youve done 8.6k already, youre probably on course to do 12k by October and Id change the oil then if nothing else. IMO a year is a long time for oil.
