Vibration at 4000rpm

Hi, had the 172 a couple of weeks after running an STI for a year and I must say Im over the moon with the little pocket rocket. However I have noticed when the rev counter hits 4000rpm there seems to be a vibration noise from the centre box of the exhaust. Once past 4500rpm it goes as away. I was wondering if anyone else has had this propblem with their 172 and what causes it and whats the cure?

Cheers in advance

its a common problem known as aka the 4k rattle , only cure is to replace the centre box, but most people tend to buy and aftermarket system (as I did) as this is a cheaper (and better option).

Very common as others have said, if its under warranty get it replaced, otherwise get yourself a nice S/S zorst !

errrmmm..i had this rattle on my cup...i looked under the car and shaked the exhaust while lying on the ground, saw it was hitting the heatshield at the middle and simply bent the heatshield a bit, good as new!

whats all the crack about new exhausts?!

Baffles break down inside the centre section. Requires new exhaust. Ive had 3 and most people on the forum have experienced this at one point.

Hmm.
Think I have just started having this problem on my 172 Cup - done 33000 miles.
Is it just an annoyance or does have to be fixed?

Also had one of the brackets hold the engine computer break - anyone else ever had that?

Andrew

Another common fault, renault techies normally break the bracket whenever they touch it.

Ah!
It just seemed to fracture though - just where the bolt is.
Couldnt work out what the noise was at first!

Anyway, as for the exhaust.
Does it require urgent work or can it be left without any problems other than the noise?

Andrew

Can be left really. Obviously I wouldnt do another 100k miles but mines been rattling for the last 6k and hasnt done any harm.
