Virgin Broadband Traffic Management

PMSL...

Broadband Size: M
During peak times, the top 3% of downloaders on the Size: M package download at least 300MB of traffic each, with the top 3% of uploaders uploading at least 150MB of traffic each.
Any users hitting this amount during peak times (4pm till 9pm) will have their broadband speed temporarily traffic managed – their download speed will be set to 1Mb, with their upload speed set to 128Kb. This will last for 5 hours from when the traffic management policy is applied.
Even if a Broadband Size: M user has their speed temporarily traffic managed, they can still download over 2,500 music files per day.

if you download 300mb+ you get traffic shaping applied to you? seriously, im going to change.........

ive been getting 900kbs+ in the day until about 2pm, then cant get over 150kbs until after the early hours, and i dont even download that much!

Did they advertise as an unlimited/no restriction service if so could be an easy way for people unlucky enough to have them as their isp to get out of their contracts?

no, not really. there will always have been an FUP.

PMSL.

Aren't you simply trying to cut costs?

We've never believed in cutting costs for the sake of it. We want to deliver the best possible value to all our customers – and that's exactly what we're doing. That's why we've recently doubled the speed of our top broadband package up to a supersonic 20Mb, and will be launching 50Mb broadband services in the future.

If everyone used their connection to the limit, they'd be out of business.
Bandwidth isn't as cheap as they sell it for.. it isn't anywhere near as cheap as they sell it for..

ive asked them for my bill to be reduced to reflect the speed they are providing me with, i dont think i am in the top 3% but im certainly being 'managed'

OK, so 3GB over 5 hours is classed as BAAAD on the XL package (20Mb right?)

So, lets work out an average of what they say you can "use" fairly (downstream).

3GB = 3,145,728 KB
3,145,728 KB over 5 Hours = 629,145.6 KB per hour
629,145.6KB over 60 minutes = 10485.76KB per minute
10485.76KB over 60 seconds = 174.76KB per second

174.76KB per second = 1398.08 Kb/sec
1398.08Kb = 1.37Mb/sec

Soooooooooooo..

If you are on the 20Mb package, on average for those "peak hours" you're allowed to use 1.37Mb/sec else you're using unfairly.

;)

Ouch.

  Better than yours. C*nt.
Sounds fair to me. Not least of which 99% of that 3% will be downloading or uploading illegally anyway!

"Hi, I'm trying to illegally share music and pornographic materials using the broadband service I pay you for, but I'm getting slow speeds between 4pm and 9pm"

Operator hangs up.

It's kind of similar to whinging at a policeman for closing a lane on a motorway which is preventing you from doing 100mph down the overtaking lane...

No.

Overselling a product is a dangerous thing.. most people wouldn't notice, but the people who do are always very vocal :)

Why?

I'm saying about them whinging about them not being able to do something which is illegal - so where does driving down the overtaking lane at 70mph fall into illegal (inconsiderate, yes, illegal, no)

Or am I confusing myself?

You're presuming people are doing something illegal tho.. which isn't always the case.. :)

Either way, I don't care.. I just wish ISPs would go back to the old 512k, 1Mb, 2Mb system (ADSL, but cable used to be sane too).. where you got what you paid for.. Heh. (And they could cope with)

Note I said that 99% of people are probably doing something illegal anyway.

Granted not all the time etc., but c'mon, the majority of people who download an excessive amount of data in that period of time will be distributing media...

i put up with heavy traffic shaping with pipex for a year, youve no idea how good it is to now be with an isp which doesnt traffic shape/throttle in anyway

newnet all the way :)

In this day and age? I don't think so really, there are now thousands of legit ways to use one heck of a lot of bandwith, Youtube, BBC iPlayer, downloadable content for games, online data storage, one day soon there will also be a mass-market way to rent movies online (iTunes). The weekly podcasts I download from iTunes on a Sunday evening weigh in at over 300MB!

I'm also going to get punished for uploading 50 photos in one go, hardly severe use of the internet is it? I only have a 6mp camera as well, when I upgrade to a newer model that 150MB will be used after uploading about 20 images.

  Polo + Micra
so downloading a HD film through xbox live is out the window then even though i'm on there xl package:dapprove:

Truesay - I think the way things are going in this day and age we are going to end up using that pretty quick - I'd forgotten about the iTunes HD content...

only noticed this last night. less than 900kps at like midnight! this morning is back to normal but seriously thats so frickin stupid, it's the only reason i decided to go wi9th them!

Yep, one of those a night would probably put you over.. which isn't good.

This is why I think discs are safe for a bit yet.. internet providers over here wouldn't be able to cope with everyone going to digital downloads for movies..

So, moral of the story is.. keep that Blockbuster card and get Sky HD :D

The speed is annoying me alot. I only get a 576kbps speed anyway and trying to listen to online radio is a pain in the arse. Buffers more than it plays. No way can I be in the top downloaders as I only get online for a few hours a day and only browse sites, no downloading movies or whatever.

I've had nothing but excellent, rock solid relaible service from NTL/Virgin for years now. The 20mb upgrade from 10mb went smoothly, and for the most part I get well above 16mb and as high as 18mb. The peak traffic restriction can be frustrating, but over a 24h period I can download far more. I can see how it would be annoying for some people though.

The vast majority of my interwebery is now done on this 16mb ADSL connection, which sucks in comparison to my UK Virgin pipe.

  Mondeo TXS Bardge.
i had been doing all my update to night, firmware, anti virus etc, and it pushed me over the download limit, one second i'm downloading at 300kp/s the next i'm lucky if i'm hitting 15, its going to take ages as one update is almost 90mb.its gonna take hours instead of minutes.

Was way better when it was telewest, but i'm glad they've changed the times. I went from a 20mb to 2mb connection when moving house so got kinda used to the fast speed and end up getting 'shaped' everyday now :(

It was mega fast at 11am this morning.

I'm only hitting approx 11888 Kbps, 11.61 Mbps right now.

This isn't going to be true for all broadband services because of the nature of the Cable network. Cable broadband is based on a multiaccess network television network, so everybody shares the local segment (your neighbourhood). It's like being on one big ethernet hub, everyone has to share the bandwidth on the segment.

If a few people on your street are hammering their links you're gonna lose service and this is why restrictions are probably being put in place.

This is why I stick with a good LLU DSL service, as it's point to point from the customer to the exchange. The only time you're going to get a bottleneck is on the trunks that backhaul the traffic onto the providers core network from the local exchange. I've never had a problem with this myself and I use alot of bandwidth.

A good DSL service is better for larger bandwidth users. You can get ADSL2+ for peanuts now so why bother with shitty Cable.

Virgin was always fine when I lived with the rents, we had the 4mb connection and it was always 4mb and reliably quick... but since I moved out and went on 2mb I've had nothing but problems. I dont even download stuff either and have Setanta broadband which I cant use as it wont stream... in 350kb/s or 600kb/s. I did a speed test and when I get home from work the worst I have seen is 76kb/s, and 500kb/s uploads... so uploads are quick, but download speed is so poor I cant even stream youtube and it's like dial up when browsing.

I phone NTL and complained twice so far about this, 1st time they upgraded me for free to 4mb, then again to 20mb, but the best I've seen was 5mb during the day and that didn't last long before it was down to 3-4mb. Now I can finally understand why they get slagged off so much when I call up and have to phone some premium rate number to speak to some muppet indian woman who can barely speak English and is determined to keep me on the phone as long as possible with pointlessly bullshit slow ways of doing there tests... then to tell me my router, net card or whatever else is faulty... erm, nope, it works just not properly and not all the time... She then tells me that losing 19.9mb of my 20mb connection is acceptable. Utter b****cks and infuriating, so I have today as my last day of cool off and am considering cancelling and not paying my bill. I've been raped on 0906 tech support charges to useless t***s that dont have a f**king scooby and not got the service I've paid for... not even once in the times I'd normally be using it... peak times they call it, but I prefer "normal" times people would use it... ie when they are at home and not at work.

If I used torrents etc I'd have cancelled by now, but I cant even use my Setanta login to watch any boxing which f**king sucks.

Mate, get off that crap and get onto a good ADSL2+ service

The technology is going that way....Cable is shite

Cable's always been much faster and a more reliable connection in the past and it was always 100% reliable and fast at my parents... still is... but since I've moved (okay, so it's from a road where the houses are 600k+ to 120-200k) but I dont see any reason why this should have any effect. There's obviously more usage in my area, but no excuse really, I'm paying for 2mb and not getting it... might go onto Sky
