Virgin Trialing 200mb

05 Plate MG ZR 105 Trophy
Virgin Media is back in the press again today and this time it wants speeds that go even faster...

Following news that it may unbundle its cable network the contentious ISP is taking real world tests to a new high with the first customer pilots of 200Mbit connections. Virgin claims this to be the fastest implementation of DOCSIS3 technology in the world, ahead of services in both Japan and the US which currently top out at 160Mbit and 101Mbit respectively.

Who are the lucky testers? It's those jammy residents of Ashford, Kent once more who were also the first to trial Virgin's 50Mbit service way back in September 2007. The tests will last for six months to assess performance and commercial viability - something which could be hard to justify given the real world limitations of wireless N technology already make 50Mbit a challenge.

"We're really excited to be embarking on this journey of discovery," said Virgin CEO Neil Berkett. "With the only true next generation network in the UK, we're at the forefront of innovation and understanding when it comes to ultrafast broadband services and the 200Mbit pilot will give us further insight into how true ‘wideband' services might be used by consumers."

May this finally be the first test where we can say: Too fast, don't need it? Or have I just broken the primary rule of the savage downloader?

In related news Virgin Media has reported its finances for Q1 2009 with total revenue virtually unchanged at £936m compared to 947m during the same period last year. Earnings were back in the black however jumping from a £2m loss in Q1 2008 to a £13m profit. Customer additions across broadband, television and mobile phone divisions were also up 47,300 to 3.73m, 30,600 to 3.65m and 62,900 to 712,300 respectively.

Given the current economy, they're impressive figures.

Mind you, it doesn't matter how fast your line is as most website servers are are nowhere near 100mb. Never mind 200mb lol.

of course it matter for simultaneous downloads and streaming/ip hd tv with live previews of whats on the channels

ok it only matters to geeks but still ;)

Shame their core network is still woefully inept.. f**k knows why so many people fall for their marketing strategy.. it's just shitty old nthell with bells on

More ex-NTL customers seem to have problems than those who were with Telewest. I'm pretty happy with my VM service. Actually I'm very happy as they improved my monthly discount today.

I love there marketing strategy! Do you want super fast FIBRE internet rather than standard copper?? If so come to Virgin (or words to that effect)

A load of people in my street have switched over to get 50mb broadband only for me to tell them that they are still on good ol copper just unbundled OLO to Virgin ... LOL fail.

It amazes me they can get away with that TBH.

i've got the 10 here. We have 4 PCs using it in our house. 2 mostly just on FB but the other 2 doing skype, iplayer, torrents etc.

It regularly f*cks up to the stage where iPlayer won't work.....10meg FFS!

re richy above: LOL yeah! when they said there is an installation charge, I thought they meant routing fibre cable into the house or something. "oh no" the guy said, "the fibre ends somewhere at the top of the road, it's all copper down the street". plugs in router and farks off....
unbelievable.

Clauses in the ad do state that its only in their network area.

MARKONE: FIbre optic to the green box at the end of th street, copper from there. Still far superior to copper all the way from a BT exchange

I know its surprising how many people think that!

Its called fibre to the cabinet. BT are looking at doing that. But they make it sound like they are running the fibre all the way to your house... errr NO!

FTTC = Fibre To The Cabinet
FTTH = Fibre To The Home.

One day we might have FTTH but for now cost wise I can only ever see it being FTTC and then normal copper the rest of the way (usually the last 2 km or so.

Aye but its very cunning and I know people who just go and order it and expect 50mb.. thats where they should read though! lol

Yes it is far superior But France Telecom currently have copper lines all over the country.. they run 50mb fine.. this country cant do that!

Mainly coz BT have no idea about what need replacing in the network. But thats another discussion me think!

lol yes it is

My 20mb line rarely hits 14mb these days. It's been getting steadily worse recently. Fills me with confidence for the alleged upcoming 50mb 'upgrade' :dapprove:

I don't give a fook if they can get 2.6trillion MB broadband! Get the f**king HD channels sorted!!!

They need to splash their cash in other areas of their company like the TV service instead of focusing on broadband all the time :(

Will be agggess till we see FTTH.

If nothing else because it would break all the frigging time !

You can only bend it so far before it snaps being glass and all.

You'd be surprised.. A lot of major companies and some areas of the country do have FTHH already.

Cost wise BT have decided on FTTC for the moment as its too much hassle and money to do everyone.. ie for me I live in the country...thats'd be a nightmare for them.

I have nothing bad to say about NTL. When I was at uni we had free dial-up all day everyday, all for having their line installed.

Brilliant!

They need to invest in the networks as TV Services are quickly going to an online medium and the current tech will only go so far!

Toslink cables are flexible. Is this not in the same ballpark, technology wise? Although optical, I guess they can't carry any real bandwidth?

TBH it could be delivered by two cups and a piece of string for all I care, so long as it provides the advertised speeds.

Businesses yes, but I just don't think it's durable enough for home use.

I work with fibre everyday in exchanges and its so easy to break - step on it and its bust and its a lot more expensive than CAT5.

Trying to have that implimented behind the back of millions of computer desks in homes nationwide is a hell of an effort. The only way around it I can see is still having cat 5 to the computer but fibre to the wall socket. And of course MOBOs don't tend to support fibre connections atm anyway :rasp: so yeah I reckon it's still a long way off.

Roy I don't know wtf your on about sorry :dapprove:

ps. Cba with grammar and s**t tonight.

Or carrier pigeon??!

ITs weird as I ssay because we do things for Germany and France and they run speeds of upto 50mb on copper cables.. (Well parts of germany not all!)... you live/lived out there so maybe you have a different view on it?!!

the fibre optic cables they stick in the ground are pretty tough

i've seen it being dragged in by a bunch of hairy arsed contractors on a jobber on the weekend and it work fine after;)

That'll be because it's heavily armoured cable, and generally expensive.

Be interesting to see if anyone comes out with affordable fibre switches for the home.. looong way off though.

Apparently people in Dundee and Bournmouth are getting fibre to their house using the sewers no idea when they will do or if any isp's will take it up. As a 3rd party is laying them isp's will probably have to rent them.

  Better than yours. C*nt.
I'm on VM's 20Mb service and regularly get it - I get great download speeds and then when I download my limit I get throttled to *exactly* what they say I'll be throttled to, which I think is more than fair.

If there is an issue with your service, call them. I've not had any issues with calling with a fault, they're helpful, understanding and not condescending like the Sky call centre. Last week phoned to moan about the energy saving turning the hard disk off, stopping you rewinding live TV. Apparently they've had a few complaints about it, and are looking into either a software fix for the current box that allows you to disable the feature, or in their new version of the hardware. They also explained where their HD box is better than Sky's, as I asked about further HD channels. Apparently Sky still hold rights to them, but later this year that runs out for a few of them so VM are having those as well.

There are differing grades, and Toslink cables are flexible but only up to a point - if you think how much Cat5 can put up with (trapped in floor tiles, pinched between desks) then you realise just how little Optical fibre would survive. Not least of which, if you break it in the box in the street it makes it very, very difficult to fix because it's notoriously difficult to join. You can't just terminate it and connect onto that in 5 minutes, I think it needs fairly specialist equipment.

It would help if they could deliver 20mb where they say they can. That might be a start :D

Amen to that.. and even when you do get it they just cap the f**k out of you for being a 'heavy user' after downloading that one PS3 demo !!!

Let me keep 20mbit and don't cap me you gheys !!!

f**k knows about German ISPs. I had a 16mb line in my apartment and it was usually ~14mb. That's all I had to know :)

RE: Virgin throttling, I don't have an issue with that as long as I get ~20mb inside the T&C. I used to but it has slowed down recently. Mike, no point calling them. I've been through all that in the past. They aren't going to listen, they'll just keep me on the phone for hours rambling on about disabling firewalls etc. as though I'm some computer r****d. I'm going to try a few things over the weekend and then write them a letter.

  RIP Dan
High speed over copper depends on the size of the copper. They may get high speeds in France as they have good quality copper installed, 0.5 instead of 0.35 etc.

BT's ducts are full, old copper inside = expensive to replace.

Fibre to the gaff will come in the year 3000 the way its going at the moment.

We are just putting in our NGN cores at the mo, fixed and mobile. Should put a stop to 64k switching rates in the exchanges.

We are only running 2Mb here at the mo and just trialling 8Mb so be happy with what you have....certainly meets my p0rn demands for now ;-)
