Vista

Nah,
Every single OS sucks badly.
Hate them all.. they all have their really shitty points, heh.

True tho,

I love XP in some ways, hate it others.
I love OSX in some ways, others, it's just downright STUPID.
I love Debian (Linux) in some ways, others, it's just rediculous.

I'm in some sort of OS hell, haha.

Either way, DazOS Development needs to start.

True enough I guess. I'm just jacking off because I have Vista installed on TheBeast2 and it's driving with one hand on the wheel with a million windows and a million apps open whilst looking the tits. To be fair, it's just nice to be at home using my desktop PC again. I had a minor issue with my X-Fi audio card but that was soon sorted.

I installed this on my iMac today and it runs perfectly. I still prefer OSX.

Fair play. OSX is superb from what I've seen. Vista was a long time coming. Being a Windows user though, I love it. Why did you install it on a Mac though? Some apps that you must have that only work under Windows? ;) ;)

From the Dell site.

"This system has four memory slots. To run the Windows® Aero™ feature a minimum of 1 GB dual channel memory is required. PCs purchased with Windows® Vista™ Home Premium and 512 MB memory will NOT run the Windows® Aero™ feature. Also, note that your system may share system memory with the graphic card. In this Dell recommends 2 GB of dual channel memory for optimal Vista experience Please Note: If you have chosen 512MB of system memory the performance of Vista™ can vary and sometimes be perceived as sub-standard.

512MB DDR2 533MHz Memory [Included in Price]
1024MB Dual Channel DDR2 533MHz [2x512] Memory [add £47.00 or £1/month1]
2048MB Dual Channel DDR2 533MHz [4x512] Memory [add £141.00 or £3/month1]

TheBeast2 (right now) has a 1.05GB footprint with a lot of stuff going on. Music, downloading, surfing, MSN, a million explorer windows open and lots of IE tabs open. TheBeast2 has 2GB at its disposal. 2GB RAM sounds about right for a pukka Vista experience. My Vaio AR31E lappy came with 2GB out of the box and runs it without a problem. Of course, TheBeast2 pwns it hardcore overall though.

Aero ran fine on my Athlon64 3000+, 1GB RAM, and Tri-Head (Radeon 9550 AGP and Radeon 9200 PCI).

Sure, 1GB should be fine, but 2GB might be worth a punt if you work your PC like a Vegas hooker and don't want any page file action going on :D

Anyway, I only really started this thread because I'm listening to Daft Punk on an array of bows and I feel good about my PC(s).

Is it not full of errors at this early stage?

Nope. There are some issues that some people will encounter. The most common problem appears to be with audio drivers. I'm running a 7950GX2 and a X-Fi, and I have been playing games today at stupid FPS. Doing all the things I did under XP and then more. My machine has not skipped a beat :)

I dont do PC games. Apart from Champ Manager, but thats hardly a strain on any grahpics card!! lol

Will look into it!

On balance...much of the reason for this thread is based on me moving back to TheBeast2 after using lappos for several months. This machine just takes the piss :approve: God knows what it would have been like if I had gone for Intel Conroe instead of AM2 64. As it stands it's unstoppable. Grrrr :approve:

vista is about as ghey as it gets.

and its bloody expensive.

I like a well rounded, balanced argument :D

Dont worry fella. I'm a serial spammer now.

You might know I'm a Linux Ubuntu die hard. Nothing compares to my Ubuntu setup. I've got it just right for me. It's cost me nowt and it looks very pretty. It runs on my old lappy brilliantly. I had problems running Vista on the same machine to do the same thing. I'd have to upgrade the RAM atleast. Why spend money when you dont have too?

I've tried Vista on a beta release and didnt like it. It's easier to shoot down something than be constructive. Most of CS knows this! :rasp:

That is my constructive post for the day (I'll get back to my spamming now ;))

That all seems fair enough really.

I was exclusively a Windows PC owner until October last year and I still prefer the newsgroup software which is available for that platform, that's why I retain Windows functionality on my Mac. The good thing with the Mac is that it runs both OS perfectly. The performance rating within Vista rates my iMac as more capable at running the OS than my brother's Vista designed PC :D

What issue did you have with the X-Fi, Roy? That was the major hurdle I had when I tried the beta version of Vista 64. That, and the wireless NIC driver.

Anyways, MSoft is f**king me right off at the moment. That's probably the main reason for me sticking to XP for now - rather than any technical considerations.

The full blown retail product pricing of Vista is a piss-take. They should can OEM altogether, but keep the pricing structure and make that retail. They own the O/S world FFS - it's about time they cut us some slack. ;)

Well. Firstly, I am using Vista 32bit on this machine (TheBeast2) for 2 reasons; It was a copy I had bought for a 32bit HP Pavillion, which proved impossible to get stable working AC97 drivers for. Secondly, although obviously this machine is 64bit, I have no problem with using a 32bit OS (for now) since I am reading driver horror stories about the 64bit.

I also upgraded from XP as the install was already a fresh one. I figured I would do a fresh install of Vista if I needed to, but that I was better off with all my old mobo drivers and all that implies (getting them specifically to install under Vista may have been a pain -was my logic). The upgrade all went fine except for the X-Fi.

The issue was initially that Vista seemed totally happy with the old XP drivers despite there being absulutely no sound. Eventually of course I got the Vista 32bit X-Fi drivers from the Creative website. The install went swimmingly except that afterwards there was still no sound. A few tries later after using Driver Cleaner, safe mode, and general wizardry, the Vista X-Fi drivers were all sorted. The whole thing in reality took less than 20 minutes when I got around to attempting to fix it. I now don't seem to have the Creative Audio Console anywhere though. I'm sure that can be fixed but for now it sounds as good as it ever did, so I'm not going to f**k about with it...

The only other small stumbling block was that my games were running at about 20fps until I installed the Vista Nvidia drivers for my 7950GX2 :rasp:

Generally dont use new OS's at all when they first come out. But gave it a go and i hated it!

ran slow on my pooter. P4 3hgz, 1gb ram. crashed a lot. first app i installed BSOD'd and i hate do do a system restore through dos. half the apps i wanted to use werent compatible.

went back to a 3 year old build of XP pro solid with crap and it runs much nicer, a lot quicker and is definitely more stable!

ill give it another go in a service pack ot two's time tho! :D

strange as I run it on a 3ghz with 1gb ram fine, the drivers was the biggest problem though, you have to get them right!

Mine kept crashing too but i found out it was dodgy ram so nothing to do with vista

Yes m8 - it was. But why?

MSoft are hardly helping themselves in the piracy wars with charging stupid money for their O/S software. Granted, you'd still get people trying to use illegal O/S's, even if Vista Premium was a fiver, but they should at least attempt to generate a sensible retail packaged pricing structure.

Paying £300+ for a home O/S? I'd want it to wash the car, clean the house and suck me off for that amount.

Roy - sounds like you've got Vista's X-Fi issue nailed then? Tbh, I don't really use the Audio Console much, even in XP - so I guess I wouldn't miss it much in Vista.

I'm still pro-XP in my views for now. Obviously, I'll migrate to Vista at some stage, but I really don't see any urgent need to do so. Maybe a DX10 would change my view. ;)

I did a clean driver install eralier and the console is now back. I find it handy because I like to have auto-mute on headphone detection. All sorted.

Actually, I lie. I do use that ^^^^^ function!

Glad to hear it's all good, though.
