Like Bio said, at the end of the day it's a 1.2, you can try all you like but you're never going to get what you're after! Performance mods don't really come cheap either. If you're desperate then you'd be better putting your cash towards a looked after mk1 with a decent sized engine. Can pick them up for sub £1,000.
take stuff out of it, spare wheel, rear seats, all the weight you can. it will increase bhp per tonne and you'll notice a slight difference. there's not much else you can do with 1.2's.
