Warm bonnet machine polishing? Over-cautious or genuine question?

Chaps,
I'm helping out a m8 who's bonnet has football scuff on it from kids playing near his car. He's about a 25 minute drive from me, but could I just make a start on the car straight away, when he gets to mine?

Ironically, I removed three surface scratches from his passenger door about two weeks back - and now this happens! I'm mentioning it as the front area of the car (BMW 330ci) appeared really quite warm. I know its a cardinal sin to machine polish in direct sunlight. But can the heat of a switched off engine be just as detrimental? Or am I just being OTT?

Cheers,
D.
