Water pump

  LY R26 #288
how hard is it to do a water pump on a 182? I thought the car was making a strange noise yesterday when I looked under the bonnet to see where its coming from it sounded like the water pump and the pulley isn't running true when the engine is running. It looks like its fractionally buckled if you know what i mean?

Just looked at a diagram it must be the PAS pump not the water pump. Its the one below the alternator. I didn't think pas pumps were prone to failing. Maybe I'm just being paranoid lol.

it's always possible that it's the pump. rare but it does happen. Quite a big job as it's far eaier to take more off and give yourself some space. I take all the cambelt covers off, remove the aux tensioner, and then you can get to all the bolts easier

sounds like fun, its deffo the pump as you hear it changes sound when you move the steering wheel. Its making a very subtle grinding sort of sound. I'll try get a video up

dan if you could give me a quick run down on the best way of doing it. I presume the bumper and alternator have to come off? Do i have to faff about with the engine mount and lower the engine or anything?

The PAS pump should make different noises when the steering wheel is changed, depends how loud of course. If you have the front jacked up it may be worse, then there is the possibility of your top mount bearings grinding.

yeah but its the grinding noise that changes when you turn the wheel and the fact that the pulley on the pump is wobbling and not running straight sways me towards the pump lol

Video there, not that you can see it much but the pulley is definatly wobbling.

Yeah Fred, I realised after I started the thread.

Just looked at a diagram it must be the PAS pump not the water pump. Its the one behind the alternator. I didn't think pas pumps were prone to failing.

I've got the F4R workshop manual so I've been looking at that. Looks like you gotta remove quiet a lot to get it out.

yup

bumper off
slam pannel off
aux belt off
alternator upper bracket off
alternator off
PAS pump off

recon pumps are £165 (£100 cheaper than a new renault unit, and the warranty is twice as long, go figure!)

common failure, i do a lot of them

Thanks for the info Fred, makes things so much easier.

Where do you get the recon units? just from a motor factors?.

  Lionel Richie
without punting my company, i do them, as do others (2 year warranty)

theres a rumor you can get them from motorfactors for about £60, trust me, that isnt possible

Excellent. I'll see what I can source locally (ie GSF etc.) just for ease but if I don't get any joy I'll get in contact with you.

make sure you check the offset of the pulley flange (three legged flange) if its not offset from the spindle (99% wont be), do not fit it

bit of a mixed bag one motor factors told me 118 + vat for a new unit apparently but thats on an exchange basis? And the other one i tried said 180 + vat for a recon unit lol strange.
