what car for £4000 or under

  Clio 1.8 16v

i am thinking of gettin a bigger car now because my clio is gettin a bit to small for my needs!!i was looking at a vectra 2.5 v6 gsi but been told they drink fuel what other car could i get that looks good, performs good, reliable, and is good on fuel?realy the same as my clio 16v but bigger and not the 19 16 sum thin different!!

!

lol, however much you rack your brains, i bet you dont find anything that will be anywhere near as good as your clio. been thinking about my next car recently and the ONLY thing that will be a step up from the clio (IMO) is an Audi S3, but they are £15k second hand, and a standard one still wouldnt be much of a step up performance wise either, it sould have to be chipped and the handling sorted too. Trust me mate, stick with the Valver, after all the money you have spent on it it will last a good couple of years before anything major goes wrong again. and if you got a few bob lying around, try and source a 2L megane bottom end, then the performance will blow you away.......

Ive looked into the Delta Integrale before - and even a totally shagged Evo will never be as low as £4k.

For that money youll get an OK Delta 4WD, dodgy Delata HF Integrale 8v or a dog-eared Delta Integrale 16v. Most Delta HF Integrale Evoluzione (1 & 2) will be the far side of £10-15k.

For my pennys worth, Id suggest a Volvo 850 T5. Lots under £5k and most make well over 200bhp at the wheels as standard. Totally bomb-proof and as with most Volvos, detuned.

  1995 Mondeo Speed Machine

One of my mates dad has just got a T5. Goes very nice, although his is an auto which takes a bit of the fun off it. Absolutely drinks fuel tho!

Yeah, most Volvos drink fuel. The old ones in particular, like Saabs, are very idiosyncratic machines. They dont see 0-60 as important, so they gear cars to overtake best at 50-70 - and if it has a low 0-60 or high top speed, its a bonus.

All my family that I can think of have Volvos: a 960 Mk2 3.0 estate (still not matched for load capacity), a 960 Mk1 3.0 saloon, a 340 that just refuses to die, a couple of S40s and a 240 saloon (proper old tank). All are shocking on economy. But my dads 960 is on the original brake pads and back box at 110,000 miles!!!!!!!

think i will just keep my clio for a bit longer then coz i have a new clutch and recon gearbox so i think i could keep it a bit longer and save up a bit more money for a better car i suppose if u work to a budget u get what u pay for!!the volvo looks nice ben what engine is in that?think a volvo is a bit to bigand u wouldnt get that many looks in it as i do in my clio:)

I have a jap import mr2 gt turbo 240bhp 0-60 just over 5sec 50,000miles cost £3700. There are a quite a few of these bargins about for under £4000. Dont handle as well as a clio but down the straight not much can touch them.

The car above is a V70R - proper firebreather! (V = estate; S = saloon)

Basically, the 850 was facelifted and called the S/V70 for a couple of years before the rounded Mk2 V70 came in. The T5 badge has been worn by a number of versions of the 2.3 5-cylinder turbo engine. But theyre all 225bhp plus. The first 850 T5 was 225bhp and spawned the 250bhp T5-R (that was initially a special edition available in cat-sick yellow) - these are the cheaper cars and are usually on sale from £2,000 upwards.

The S/V70 used the same 2.3 engine and the T5 came with 240bhp, the R had 250bhp and the R AWD had 265bhp. The R versions came with twin exit pipes at the rear.

A lot of T5s that get rolling roaded make a lot more than Volvo claim and are very easy to tune safely as theyre set up very conservatively. Lots of Rs run over 300bhp and are Q-cars with it! I heard that the Police T5s are tuned by TWR (who have a factory in Sweden and helped a lot with the T5s development and BTTC involvement), but Im not sure about that.

bet the insurance is expensive on an mr2turbo and the volvos i suppose u cant realy beat the clio realy .

  Clio 200 FF

Rover 620Ti - 200bhp as standard, 4 doors and big boot if you want a bigger car or a 220turbo coupe (same engine) with better looks

Im thinking of getting a MR2 turbo as my next car, they still look good after all these years

get a cossie.

Or a Saab 9000 turbo, theres plenty of varients in the 9ks. I have the crapest one, auto and 2 litre na, still good for 120mph and I can manage about 40mpg if I take it easy, in the teens if I hammer it.

Manuals are much better on the fuel and the eco power LPTs sip the fuel and are faster.

hmm i wounder what them sunnys r like?no not quite the car for me the almera still need sum thin to turn heads was thinking about an escort rs turbo but the interia is mingin so that 1 is out the window, still on the vectra idea though just gutted about it bein heavy on fuel:(never thought about the cossi totaly 4got about it,but they r group 20 so the insurance wold be bad as i have got 3points and a £15,000 claim against me for gettin nocked into a car full of aisans n cracking there rear light but suprise suprise all got back injurys and whiplash haha funny i hate em now

Still does turn heads the Almera, Rare not many people really know what they are... also a point of interest is that they will take to running the pulsar gubbings... Engine drops straight in... oh and because its not known so much the 2.0GTi is only a group 14 insurance. What more can anyone ask for 3.5k. and being jap its has all the toys, but it comes down to personal choice.

;)

Avoid the almera. My grans got one. sh*te cars, nothing but hassle same with the sunnys.

If you want a nissan then a bluebird/silvia turbo, 200sx are not bad. And turboed. May look a bit dated but they shift.
