What is the 5k kick ?

^^Is it a case of the 172 engine not reaching the same peak power as the 182 engine during this 'phase' perhaps? Not having the 4-2-1 manifold certainly must effect the breathing?

Is the kick more pronounced in the 1*2s compared to the 197s or am I just numb to it because I have a turbo motor aswell?

When I had a turbo'd car, and I test drove a 182, it felt flat and slow all the way to 6500rpm. When we hit 5k, the salesman said "did you feel that surge of power? It's awesome" and I just said, No lol.

Can feel it now though. It's just what you're used to.

Love this term, only ever been a passenger in a RS Clio but then that "should make it even more pronounced".

Just feels like a small petrol though..

p/s. Shouldn't even be below 5k rpm if you're driving it right.

Pmsl @ some comparing it to a turbo:lolup: that sure brightened up my day !
- oh btw, i've driven a 172 lots of times, so know what i'm on about. I'm not talking bs like most on here.

The last time I got the 5k kick the road ahead went all blurry, then my laptop told me I had manifold trouble, then all the rivets popped out of the floorpan and broke off. Thank f**k I had a double shot of NOS to get me home.....

Lol, I hope you didn't blow the welds on the intake.

it certainly exists, RR graphs show it quite well, well mine did anyway...

be carefull though, when mine kicks in it's normally at about 88mph and I end up going back in time and needing a new flux capaciter

I can definetly feel it in my 172 but to be fair it's usless as by the time you've hit it the car your trying to beat is already ahead lol.

5k is to far, i need it at 3 k and and too keep going. Turbo ftw

Do you have to be caining it hard (i.e revin the b****cks off it) in every gear to feel it or do you have to build up the revs then put your foot to the floor at 5k ?

rev the s**t out of it and you'll feel it. Usually in 2nd or 3rd you'll feel it most. You'll know about it when hit 5k

You'll notice more in the first 3 gears when booting it to the redline, though some people notices it more than others, perhaps due to mods to induction, remap or exhaust, can't say for sure.

Its often known as "on cam" A forum user may say the following for example

I left the lights quickly, my reaction time must of been about 0.0000034, and I was level with the Gt2 until he started to pull on me a bit, But after it came "on cam" at 5k, I pulled about 7 lengths on him.

I notice it in mine, its not massive like the honda Vtec, but there is certainly a 'Kick' there @ 5K

  182
When the 1*2 is your first fast car its the 5K OMGZZZ!!!111
After driving something more powerful it becomes a bit less pronounced. All down to what youre used to.

My 172 Cup is the slowest (on paper) car that i've owned in years (the last being a 220bhp agressivley mapped Cupra), my ex and my bro both own 200bhp Golf turbos and my work mate owns a 250bhp Cupra all of which i drive regularly and i still feel the 5k surge in my Cup. By NO means can it even slightly be compared to the power delivery of a modded turbo motor but never the less it is still there.
