What sensors & cabling are involved with cruise control?

So, slightly random 'WTF?' moment on the motorway on Friday. Having not had a working cruise control or speed limiter for over two years (the dash lights are switchable - but that's it) - I thought I'd try it again anyway.

Switched on cruise, applied it and the display showed 72mph and kept it there. OK....... Pressed the accelerator a little to disengage it and tried it again. Worked. The increase/decrease speed buttons also worked.

Tried it again and nothing - but then I pressed the button on the wheel more firmly this time and it re-engaged.

Could it be that the switches on the wheel itself have just started to fail after 20+ years and/or corroded - hence the hit & miss? I'm happy to have a dabble myself at investigating - but the steering wheel sounds to be riddled with do's and do nots - and I'm reluctant to screw anything up!

Are the steering wheel switches generic or specific to the 1*2?

Cheers,
D.
