£3500-£4000 private.
Belts done in 2005? They're overdue a change then?
am i being really stupid here???????????????!
Yes.
He means belts have been done, the car is a 2005.
I'd say as long as you are happy with it, it doesn't matter what others think really does it?
What i would pay would depend entirely on where the belts were done.
BTM/519/Birchdown - £4k
NWP and/or some other muppet garage - £3k
The latter price bears in mind that the timings probably wrong & everything needs doing again.
+1
Your car, so all that matters is you prefer it to the money
Well, until you come to sell it, then other's opinions matter and yours doesnt, lol
£1k to get the timing corrected? lol
Minimal bolster wear sounds more like "good condition for year" than "mint" TBH
Mint is a word that gets thrown around a lot with car buying and selling and means different things to different people.
Some people say mint meaning "this looks exactly the same as when it was brand new" and others use it to mean "its in quite good condition for year"
What i would pay would depend entirely on where the belts were done.

For £4k, id also what to see at least 6 stamps in the service book (& invoices), along with a full set of top brand matching tyres.
Show me one with no wear?
I've payed £3900 from a garage
Ye both packs and wheels are mint, just been refurbed
Thats ever so slightly over the odds but nothing to be to worried about maybe a couple of hundred than ideal however...
You will see a lot of people on here saying they can get or have bought a minter for 2.5k & im sure there are a few good genuine bargains that have been had out there-
Equally & probably on a far larger scale there have been the 2.5k bargain cars that have required work upwards of 1k to bring it to that ‘mint’ position-
Buying from a dealer will always be more expensive- that people often overlook-
First & foremost because they are actually looking to make profit on a vehicle- & also cover business overheads-
Also because they offer a warranty & PX as well as finance- Something a private seller doesn’t usually do-
The final piece that I guess tarnishes some dealer & traders is for that extra money you are supposed to be buying expertise in the product & car they are selling- that ‘piece’ of mind that the car has been scrutinised to a high standard & any gremlins been rectified-
If you’ve looked at the car at the dealers & its driving fine & there are no problems then even though it seems you may have paid a bit more- essentially you haven’t because out of the current crop of available 182 ‘s on the market I would say perhaps 125 are on offer – maybe only 20% are any good-
So would you rather pay a couple hundred more for a good one or 500 – 750 less for a cr*p one only for it to fall to bits…..
As for the discussion on belts- I have to be VERY careful how I phrase this-
With the specialists on here it’s a bit like buying a fixed rate mortgage – you are buying piece of mind, the specialists do a brilliant job & are worthy of the titles specialists, however there are other garages out there that can & have completed cambelt changes before- all it means is that its something to consider when buying- it doesn’t have a MAJOR effect on price- probably more effects desirability than anything, If it has had the belts done elsewhere- theres nothing wrong with checking what parts they use & what they have replaced- then making an informed decsion..
Enjoy your new car-
Steve
