Whats everyones probs with 6x9`s

  Clio 182 (Black Beauty)
they were ALL the rage not long ago. I am gonna upgrade my fronts and rear but i have some nice pioneer 6x9`s that i was gonna install and run off my amp too.

Why does everyone diss em these days.

When i had my 6x9s installed they sounded nice and give good sound

Depends if your putting a sub in really,

Would just amp your comps front, backs arnt really needed if decent comps but amp all them and then put a sub in the boot!

Sounds better + you want to try and get the treble at the front and the bass at the back IIRC?

6x9 are pointless when used with a sub as the pressure from the sub forces agains the cone of the 6x9 stopping it from working properly and making it distort, when used on their own there is nothing wrong with 6x9them apart from the fact that it makes the sound all come from the back which is not the idea within a good audio setup. plus thieves love it when they see 6x9 on the parcel shelf as its easy money for them.

I have just Rockford Fosgate Punch 6x9's on my shelf and I think they look great! I sold my 12" sub because I didn't want the bass anymore, but plenty of Mid and Treble so I upgraded my front speakers to Rockford Fosgate 3.5" and they have done the job a treat. Still really loud on the inside without that deep thud from a sub. You can now have a leisurely drive with music on and not get taken the pee out of by other people! :D

And you can talk to other people as well while music is on in the background. Wasn't easy talking to people in my car when I had the sub on!

I had some 6x9 in the 306, it sounded ace with the subs in tha back, i wouldnt personaly put 6x9 in the clio as the parcel shelf aint the best , just upgrade your speakers and keep the sub 2..

if you like your 6x9 just put them in and enjoy them. it's only if you start wanting to make a full sq system that they become a problem. if it just for a bit of exta bass or volume they are fine.

Reason for disliking them. Especially amped 6x9's

Drags the soundstage backwards. Which way do your ears point generally? To the front right. So why amp speakers in the rear and not the fronts?

They also try to do everything bass treble mids and fall short on each generally.

I was always told to upgrade the front speakers with components as 6x9's are no good as its not often you sit in the back of your own car.

I find its mostly personal preferance. Having the bassy bit behind you and the high in front is a good balance and keeps everything nice and clear. I have 6x9s on my shelf a sub it the boot and components and its all amped up and I wouldn't change my setup for the world, I think it sounds spot on. Its all about the 'stereo image' you want to create. If you go for example to an indoor gig the sound is better as the speakers surround the crowd and gives a great ambience. If you go to an outdoor gig whilst there are still speakers behind most of the sound is right infront of you making it very 'in your face' and therefor imo not as good.

Ditto, I find they don't do anything particularly brilliantly. Just do everything at a mediocre level. One of my mates has a 200SX with them in and when we went to japfest on saturday I couldn't believe how shite they sounded really. Amped components and a sub sounds soooo much better.

What they all said!!

I generally dont run rear speakers at all, but if I did tehy would just be in the original location. I dont feel 6x9s give good sound quality, they are just used for volume

Basicly they add "too much to the rear" for an ideal SQ setup

Also the fact that they are soooo 1990's - their time was up LONG before clear lexus lights became ugly!

Maybe if you tried a good set of 6x9's like cerwin vega's instead of the goodmans one's your mum got you for christmas, you might think more positive about them;)

It's the soundstage that is disturbed mate, no matter how good the quality is in the back there is just too much of it with 6x9s fitted.

Sorry to sour-down your apples but I've never had 6x9s in my car thanks all the same
But I have listened to them in various cars before I get the "how do you know" lecture ;)

And yes - goodmans are sh1t when it comes to quality! I'll give you that

even having cerwin vega 6x9s doesn't change the fact that it drags the sound stage back. i used to run cerwin vega subs and i know they are a good brand but it still doesn't make 6x9s good. and it doesn't help you get a good overall sound. components are where its at. how many large systems or sq systems have you seen using 6x9?

VXR I agree once more

Think the point's been made, going to calm the passion before this 6x9 discussion turns nasty.....again

seeing as we are talking about sound quality, i would like to ask what difference would i notice between a 10" boxed sub and a 12" boxed sub. If they were both the same power output and same power from the amp? cos i've got a 10" just wondering would changing make an difference?

  "Navy" N17 TWO
A smaller sub is popular for a tighter bass - for dancey music etc.
Bigger subs work very well with R&B

Down to preference & what music you listen to most of the time

  "Navy" N17 TWO
My Vibe 10" Active does the job for both!

But its just a "Crap" sub IIRC tiiger lol?

Yeah most subs do have a happy medium - bigger ones will produce deeper bass.

I have a 13" with an enclosure I can flip the sub around in :)
When the sub is arse-in the bass will be slightly tighter than arse-out (magnet showing)

my set up sounds great but my sub was only £40. would i notice any great improvement splashing the cash on a dearer one?

  "Navy" N17 TWO
Depends what you are changing to, more expensive "doesn't always" mean better.

Also, the volume of the box (enclosure) will affect how it sounds too

I just got rid of my 6x9s. Upgraded the fronts to 16.5cms, put a nice set of 13s in the rear and a sub. sounds far better than when i had 13s in front and 6x9s in the rear. all the noise was coming from the rear :(
Now it sounds far better, would reckomend it.
