Whats the best way for subs to face

I always think that if you face a sub directly out towards the boot then its facing away from you and so will sound worse.

If you face it towards the rear seats then it will sound cack.

So which is the best direction? How about facing them upwards as this is the most logical to me. I was thinking of taking out the parcel shelf and bulding a box that holds both subs and 6x9s facing upwards. Is this a good idear or not? Has any1 done this?

some are designed as "free air" types which fix to the seat backs or a shelf and others need to be in an enclosure which can face in either direction as it doesnt make that much difference

Direction doesnt really matter (in most cases).

The location of the cone(s) inthe car relative to the rest of the vehicle is the factor that makes a difference.
Fire them towards the front, fire them towards the back... Doesnt matter!
when you turn your box around, the cones are located in a different spot in your boot?
Closer to the rear?
This inherently results, most often, in a lesser degree of loss through cancellation of the direct waves (subs to your ears) being interfered with by the indirect waves (reflected waves from the back wall of your trunk)...
AND the most important thing to note is that this is different for every car.
Hope this helps

Personally i would always try and make the subs face the rear windscreen in a hatchback, it does make it sound better it gives the bass a hard surface to reflect off of..

If it is a not a hatch you should more than often face the subs towards the rear of the car, i.e. out the boot.

Thats what i mentioned earlier. Havin a box which replaces the shelf with the subs facing up. Was thinking bout having my vibe 6x9s mounted as well in the box

Why? I know there was a debate about 6x9s and how they are sh*t but i like them!!

Colin_S, is this the setup you got at the moment?

If you box them in so the back of the 6x9s are not in the same area as the cone of the subs they will be ok. However the subs will drown them out and they will also mess with your sound stage. The money would be better in your pocket, spent on something else or drunk down the pub.

Na thats my old setup. I still have one of the amps but bought a mono amp for my subs, changed my subs to Polk, have a Sony HU and DSP now and also doing a new build. Although it will be very similar.

My subs and amp are gone they were on sale here a while ago but i still have the box you could buy. However the shipping on this thing will probably be quite a lot as it is heavy

I didnt think you would want it when you knew i was in Scotland. Anyway im not that bothered about selling it as my two Polks are in it at the mo in my house wired up to my home cinema system while my car is having the kit fitted.

colin_S

What other speakers you got in your setup then if you dont have 6x9s

I currently got Pioneer HU, JBL comps, Vibe 6x9s, Jenson 12" Sub, Jenson Amp.

Thats why i need new subs and amp

Just a set of Polk components, waiting for polk to bring out a 8" momo sub to go in the doors too.

Its been proven somewhere that subs are better to be faced towards the rear (except for SPL purposes) Try different positions before you bolt anything down so that you can see which you like the sound of best. For a Clio i think they sound best either facing directly onto the bootlid or angled slightly upwards if possible to hit between the bootlid and the bottom of the rear screen. The bass seems better if they are facing backwards as the subs tend to use the window and panels to circulate the air..as long as you can stop the rattling your alright.

How do you post pictures on the forum anyway..ive never figured it out. Ill try one now but if it goes pear shaped then any help would be appreciated.

6x9s suck with subs!

i think the best mix you can have with the clio

is amped components

coaxiles in rear

and two subs

yep for 98 on cars tho

my new amp died today :( back to alpine it goes

My choice was good quality head unit, Hifonics amp for sub, Good meaty pioneer sub and some 17cm Audiobahn Co-ax. Even though their not components they still sound pretty hot :)

Cheers for that Tom, i always struggle with getting pics on there. Those subs are Resonant Engineering HC12s which at £255 each are an absolute bargain for what they are. They are 1200 watts RMS, have a 24mm Xmax one way and will take 4800 watts RMS each for SPL purposes.

Sitting behind those that you cant see there are a couple of Kicker Solobaric 15s powered off a Resonant Engineering RE35-1D amp which gives them around 1700watts RMS to play with. As you can probably tell it gets a bit noisy in there. Theres around 3700 watts RMS of amplification for the bass.

With regards to the 6x9s. They are sectioned off from the subs so that the air doesnt interefere with them. Also they are only ever on when the boot is open at shows to give a bit of treble.

Ive just updated the pics on the website for some with the new install and body mods..also tey are better quality than the last lot.

they are on http://www.evilice.freeservers.comwww.evilice.freeservers.com in the Clio demo car section.

PS - if anyone is wondering what the holes are in the boot. There should be 2x mesh vents on there, similar to the front one (pictured). The problem is they keep rattling off with the bass. Ive lost 2 in a day which is a right pain. Ill update the pics as soon as i put them back on.

Whilst installing my new Jl W6 and jl 500/1 amp. I found that it sounded better facing the tailgate sligtly angled up !! Not to much of a angle mind.

It did sound good facing straight up, but it made the headlining vibrate too much, so i ditched that idea. So thats my expierence and point of view.

  350z & 16v Maxi

I would agree totally with Leigh but my headlining did not vibrate much, must be these crappy Williams

Colin

Nowt wrong with the Williams, at least i aint got a sunroof that will leak at some point !!

Nice try though buddy.
