lol u think id start this post having not done this before with slightly failed attempts?...have a word with urself u smart ass..... ive tryed this and although i get adequate results i still get orange peel at some points i would like to know in genral the method used to get a good finish

  FOR SALE!!!
you will not get ride of orange peal as this is the process which happens with paint and you need to use a spray gun and comproser to not get this but best bet is between costs let it touch dry (use hot air gun to speed up) and use sum 1200 our 1500 paper and give it a good rub down as this will leave you smooth as you will get it

regards leigh

thanks alot leigh all i really needed was to know that i needed to use paper should i wet sand it or dry sand and laquer?

  FOR SALE!!!
wet sand it between cost then only sand your last cost of laquer as the other ones dont need doing

  Chocolate Bar™
wet sanding it better as it stops the paper from clogging and damaging the paint.

i personally apply dust coats of paint until ive cover it all which could be quite a few coats, then a couple of coats of thicker sprayed paint to get it smoother before the lacquer. however, the lacquer stage is in my opinion the most important stage.

yup its all down to the lacquer as this give the finish of the paint at work we only really give them one base cost of colour then take time with the lacquer

All jump to step 3 why dont you...
The art of a good finish in good preperation, if the surface your spraying is bad you wont get good results, dont rush, I spray things over several days most people try and do everything within a few hours and botch it.

sand and clean the surface properly
prime the surface then wet sand with a fine paper, even between coats of primer (usually 3-4)
What type of paint is it, solid colour or metalic?
Metalics are much harder to get right, solid colours are way easier, you can cut a flat colour with something like G6 to get rid of the orange peel effect.
Use several thin coats of lacquer, once this is thick enough and totally dry you can also polish it flat with G6.

And yes I am a smart ass, but it wasn't clear from your thread title what you wanted to know... :rasp:
"How to achieve good results using spray paint" might have been been better... and wrong section aso ;)

haha lol you forgot to derease the panal/part as well :rasp:

ya never no at work after we have sanded and wiped down etc then go over with panal wipe the cloths still comes black and as he not in a body shop there going to be dust around and stuff so...

if any tiny specs of dust were left on there it would be covered with the primer, then wet sanded, then covered with more primer... so doesn't matter. Unless your in a serile dust free environment then you will have dust through every stage of spraying theres not a lot you can do about it.

essential item if your gonna be spraying with aersosols is a gun adapter.

only like £3 or something, basically its a gun that clips onto the top of your spray paint, so its like your using a proper spraygun.

trying to get even coats of laquer with a dead finger wont happen.

ill try find link to one

thanx fm-ava im gona get one ...u really think 3 days for the primer to set if i wanted to do the whole thing in 2 is it possible with good results refering to other post on painting the bumper strips

  Punto/Clio GTT
yea, just give them a rub down with like P180 so they go dull, then give them a really good wet coat of primer, let that dry a bit n give them another, maybe a 3rd if you got enough. leave it like 2-3 days to set in and you'll notice its still slightly textured,

wet flat the strips with either P800/P1000 or P1200, any will do, and they will be smooth, but if you feel harder you will still feel slight texture, so give them another couple of wet coats, leave that a day or 2 and then another wet flat and they'll be smooth as a babys bum.

other way of doing it is to completely smooth the strips before you primer, only problem with that is its time consuming, it can get very boring and mainly because more often than not they will "furr up". they basically go funny if you use coarse paper on plastics, its like as the friction warms it up it sort of fluffs up together.

so ide advise just applying loads of aerosol primer.

if you had a gun and 2k primer, even better, would only need to spray them once, but aerosols am fine

  Punto/Clio GTT
also, when your rubbing them down to primer, i advise rubbing down the backs of the strips too and putting primer slightly over onto the back, along the top then obviously the front part which is textured.

if you dont do the tops and backs a bit, you could find them flaking a few months down the line.
