When it all went wrong

At least youre alive mate.

I was starting to wonder if I should get a 172/CUP (mine needs to go to someone thatll give it lots of TLC) as I keep hearing horror stories about people losing the back end. I have never had mine out of shape (except with illegal tyres), occassionally in the wet when it hasnt rained for ages. Im obviously not pushing it hard enough! Do the older hot clios handle better?

But then I dont go doing a tonne down B roads.

thats made me think twice - I often hit ***mph on a sweeping, undulating A-road (ironically, because the Clio feels very composed and safe at that speed. But it obviously has a nasty sting in its tail).

Thanx for all your replies, as viv said i may ave shoved ur insurance premiums up but given the fact i didnt hit a 50k beamer i reckon im going to be the only one who has his insurance sky rocket :(

When the back end went i held it sideways for what seemed like forever but it got to a point where the car just tipped on to its side, to be honest the tyre mite ave blew out or i could have just clipped the verge and that threw it off!

Im just lucky that im alive and no one got hurt i guess.

Ive thought about the engine transplant but a few of the mounts have basically been sheared off and i know the gearbox was crunching in 3rd ne way so i mite jus give it a miss

Viv a little harsh. At the end of the day an average rear end bump with a claim for whiplash will probabley be as much as the 8/9k that the insurance company will pay!!!

Gald ur ok. It is a reminder to us all. I havnt got protected no claims bonus if i were to do it some damage would probabley be in a similar position

good luck mate - tell them u were doing 60, and that the clio is renown for its tail end!!

let them prove otherwise!!

adtmits,

Harsh or truthful? yes I’m happy he’s ok, the last thing I want is to see anyone hurt. But the fact is if he wasn’t doing 100k on a B road chances are it wouldn’t have happened....a friend of my sister did a similar thing, unfortunately he hit a brick wall and killed his passenger :(

I’m not saying that I’ve never done any thing reckless in a car, and Im not judging anyone, I learned my lesson years ago in a 1.3 metro. Thank god, it was only a 1.3

Plus the high instances of reckless driving are one of the reasons that insurance is so high on a car like the 172. Maybe that’s a good thing, forcing younger drivers to stick to smaller engine cars, giving them the experience necessary to handle (or be more responsible to road conditions) a more powerful car.

A rear end bump is hardly the same as racing down B roads....Take care and keep racing for the track.:)

Sorry BigBoreBri, but being female I think you are pretty stupid driving at speeds like that around country roads. I saw a guy killed in seconds about eighteen months ago, doing speeds like that - on a bend when he smacked head on into a horsebox. I was immediately behind the horsebox. Through his own fault he was killed instantly, I actually watched it happen and seconds later, I saw him motionless slumped over his steering wheel. I phoned the police and ambulance but knew he was dead.

That incident will stay with me forever and I realise just how quickly you can be wiped off this earth.

It isnt worth it, as very often it is another person who gets killed. A friends grandmother was killed about four years ago when a speeding Escort lost it on a bend and killed her as it mounted a pavement.

If you want to drive like a lunatic, do it on the track, as there are loads of trackdays/hot hatch days for people who want to drive their cars at excessive speeds when hopefully there arent any pedestrians and no passengers to injure or kill.

Well I think everyone is coming down to heavy on him.

When I was younger (17/18/19) I used to drive like a loon, I drove from edinburgh to peebles one night I was pissed off in my 205 GTi, and I can say if it did have a trip computer my average speed would have been at least 100mph.

Later on I had an accident, I was actually doing less that 30mph on a 30 road but it hit home hard.

I would now consider myself as a safer driver, I dont drive like and idiot although I still have had the odd race with some car or another (only really on motorways though) but common sense always kicks in about 100mph and I slow down again.

Anyway moral of the story is I used to drive like an idiot, now I dont, according to my GF is have "Finally Matured !" whatever that means ;)

KDF, My point exactly...been there done that, cringe when I see someone else doing it :( just wanna stop em before its too late

Viv there are a few guys near me who, when driving on their own in the car, they are fairly sensible. The minute they have two or three male passengers, they drive like lunatics, screeching round corners, mostly on the wrong side too.

Were you alone in your car BigBoreBri?

I was going to apologise for the rant, but I dont think I need to really!

:(

No need to apologise GR :). I See it all the time too, gonna be worried sick when my son starts driving.....gotta get him on as many track days as poss, to get it out of his system and teach him to respect the road.

I have a brother in the police force and several times he has had to knock on someones door to tell them that their son/daughter/mother/father has been involved in a fatal RTA. These sometimes inconsiderate boy racers dont ever imagine that something like that will ever happen to them or their parents.

GR - not quite the same boat as your brother, but i have witnessed 2 FATACs on the roads, when i was a CCTV operator

both were people racing through the streets and losing control of their vehicle

both incidents the victims were DOA

not the most pleasureable of sights i can tell you

now and then i do go above the national speed limits like the rest of us, but it is never on a road i am unfamiliar with and never when i have passengers - i like to reduce the risk of me seriously injuring or killing someone if i do have an accident

oh and,

sorry to hear about the motor Bri

Good lad! It isnt quite as bad on clear roads like motorways or empty dual-carriageways, but silly on smaller roads , or unfamiliar roads, where there might be unexpected tight bends or where there are other road users to consider. But then if the roads are empty and there is nobody to race, these young guys maybe drive more sensibly then.

Fair comment VivJ. I was talking from the insurance point of view. I understand the cost of life is completley different. I suppose when you do see things happen first hand it stays with you forever.

Not sure about the younger drivers bit. Being 21, Im bound to disagree;)

P.s i take it you had not rear passengers as they would have been extremley lucky to get unscathed.

I lost the back end and rolled my first 16v in november. You feel like the worst driver ever to be given a licence. Only TPFT as well so ended up salvaging what i could and scrapping the shell. It was in mint condition as well, loads better than me currant one.

Im quite upset some people are being so harsh!! ive been driving a fair few years and the road i crashed on i know quite well, It was just unlucky it caught me out and threw the car into a spin i was unable to control.

There was 2 passangers in the car and in all honesty it was extremly lucky no one was hurt, ive leart my lesson and the clio really did react in a way i never expected when the crash occured!!

Ive taken the same road at speed over what i did when the crash happend and in all honesty even in damp conditions, so i guess i was just over confident with the road in all circumstances :(

Although ive only had my 172 a short time im very sorry this happend, lve paid for it dearly, I bought the car from a mate who died recently, my no claims discount is lost, im looking at a conviction on dangerous driving, and my girl friend has left me!!

Any one who drives fast reguarly will understand what happend, any one who bought a 172 for its leather / alcantara seats wont have a clue!

  Focus ST3 + proper Mini

I lost the back end of my Mk1 172 at the start of July. Damp road, hit a small rut. Just enough to unsettle the car. next thing I knew the car was bouncing off the hedgerow and trees.

My insurance company (Directline) have paidup and Im lucky enough to be driving another 172.

were you pegging it though norfolkminis?

should i be a little worried about the back end? or do you really really have to be pushing it for it toi go?

Maybe it is partly to do with those slidy Contis. I got rid of mine after 400 miles and I am not a boy racer!

When I was seventeen and had my first car, my dad said to me "Its better to be five minutes late in this world, than five minutes early in the next". I often think about that as I see complete nutcases overtaking me approaching bends etc etc.

A neighbour was telling me that her 19 year-old nephew down in the Forest of Dean was killed three weeks ago in his pals car and at his funeral was a huge number of teenage boys all vowing to drive safer in the future! I bet that has been forgotten by now.

You live and learn, you f**ked up but im sure youll be a safer driver in future.

The most important thing is your ok.

-Rob

YES I do understand why you drive fast, I enjoy it to and have felt the back end become a little unstable in the wet so I can understand why you lost it. The sheer rush and exhilaration of speed is not a secret!!

No I didnt buy my car for its plush interior, that was an added bonus!!! I bought it coz of its performance and looks and acceleration when overtaking, and the fact that I could put my foot down on a clear road....living in deapest Cornwall there are ssooo many fatal car crashes on B roads. Ive driven miles and miles of B roads...never at 100+ and mostly behind a tractor!!

Sorry if you feel I was to harsh :( but its my opinion.

Its ok viv, when you look at the basics of doing that speed on a B road it sounds more than idiotic, but we all drive fast and more than often just to the speed the roads will permit, wether that be 60mph or 100mph...

I dont drive around taking corners at speed so the cars gonna slide all over and risk crashing, im generally very wary of corners anyway but its fair to say ive paid the price for pushing it!

You live you learn..
