Which Video Camera

Got some vouchers from work and fancy getting a video camera with it, but i know nothing about them. Would probably like to get an in car mount at some point aswell, so are the Hard drive ones better for this? Or which ones have no moving parts?

The hard disk cameras are great if you want to edit or leave a lot of your footage on the PC as it is so quick to take it off the camera. The tapes normally go in real time, i.e. if you have an hour of video, it takes an hour to put it on the PC.

There are loads of Full HD cameras out now, and it would be silly not to get one of those if you are in the market for a camera IMHO.

I have a Sony Hard disk recorder and it does the job. I just have a 500GB disk to store the videos on and it makes it easy to keep an archive.

The harddisk cameras always had lower quality than the DV tape ones but I don't know if that has now been reversed with the 1920x1080 recording of the Full HD cams. I watch videos from my normal HD cam on a HD ready LCD and it is still nice to watch without looking too heavily encoded or pixelated.

  Better than yours. C*nt.
I got a Sony HDR-SR12E and it's absolutely astounding - colours are exceptional, definition is breathtaking. Took it when walking the dog today and you can see every whisker and hair on his nose... 120Gb HDD is plenty, and the night vision is just great fun for messing around!

And the Night vision is great fun - it actually works! It's not just a 'brighten everything up silly bright'.

Much amusement.

HD = High Def, HDD = Hard Disk.

Mine is both - wouldn't buy another camera that wasn't HDD-based. No changing of tapes or discs - my mate got a Mini-DVD one and that's great. Except after half an hour he has to change the disc. I can get up to 900 minutes of 1080i video recorded and only ever have to change the battery to do it. And the supplied software is brilliant for just dumping it all onto a DVD - example I went to Farnborough airshow last week and got around an hour and a half of footage, full HD, plugged into laptop, couple of clicks later it was starting to burn a DVD with the video on.

So the hard drive ones will be ok in the car, going over bumps etc, as i heard some tend to turn off if vibrated

Mine was fine through the Vulcan and the Typhoon taking off 20 metres in front of me, so I suspect it'll be fine!

get one with aux input for a camera lens and sound. That way you can add on a bullet cam if you fancy
