which way round does thermostat go?

Does the spring side of the thermostat, face the passenger or the grille? If you were putting one on facing car? D4F I believe, its in the pipe instead in the housing facing the block.

The spring goes toward the cylinder head and on the 1.2, it's part of a moulded unit... You cannot get that installed incorrectly.
