Who’s hit maximum speed in a 172

Ive got a mk2 172, and Ive always wondered what happens if when you hit maximum speed.

Does the rev limiter cut in?

Does a 172 feel like its shaking and about to explode?

Anyone done it?

btw. played catch up with a Fiesta Zetec-S today - theyre faster than I thought ! Anyone raced one proper?

youll hit top speed at around 6100rpm according to a review I read.



Never done it myself...maxed out at 200 and then thought about traffic cops and slowed right down again

i have had it just over 140 (i have17s) and it felt fine very stable we kept this up for a good few miles was a laugh

As I passed 138 and still pulling well, I too thought about being busted; at those speeds even my Bell Euro wont give enough time to halve ones speed..!

Very rarely exeed 85-90mph these day (value my license too much) but seem to find myself seeing how quick I can get from rest to 60 all the time...

i believe roamer has gone past 140mph using his GPS, god knows what the speedo was reading (somewhere near 160????)

to my knowledge this is the fastest a 172 has travelled from a member on this board

yes, my mate has one

ran 17.018 over the 1/4 mile, though didnt seem to handle very well when we were thrashing it on a country lane

yup, i did a true GPSd 140, the speedo was actually only reading a few mph out, something like 144ish, but it was all a bit too quick to read really LoL

(Obviously all testing was done on German autobahns )

ive had an indicated 140 and still pulling but god knows how innacurate the speedo is, kinda lost my bottle fearing the police would catch me and lock me up

Ive hit !40, with revs to go when on the standard 16s, and i could see the Gearshift indicator kinda flickering on offish like a loose connection, i bottled it after that!

ive had 142 at about 6200 rpm or thereabouts on the flat standard chasing a pulsar, but with group n ecu and pipes off the airbox (for the noise) it went a bit more to 6500 rpm and about 144/5 mph on the Ai3rstrip.........
