WHO S THE DADDY

Which of you guys has got the fasted 172, modded or not doesnt matter, a guy down the road from me claimed he got 156mph from a Mk1, with a RPSORT ECU and an induction kit!! true/fasle - any one beat him?

Well, the R-Sport actually gives no real increase in power and an open induction kit could lose power, so his mods have nowt to do with the top end speed.

The mk1 is geared high enough to theoretically allow it to do 156mph, but Id like to see proof it actually happened!

p.s. So the R-Sport can be used on a mk1 then???

forgive my ignorance, but when reno work out top speed figures, surely its an equation of the top gear ratios x redline revs etc. i.e. 138mph, how come in the real world, these fgures are easily beat, or are they conservative in their figures ??

so is 156mph the champion?
Not hard to pick a random figure out of the air though...

Theres no proof!

If you drove it off a Hercules transport plane at high altitude, it should reach 156mph quite easily and thats without the R-Sport ECU, Viper induction and supersprint exhaust. The speedometer wont be working:p

Could be 156 downhill on a overreading speedo or a load of balls. I had my Old XR2 a indicated 145mph on a particualy huge down hill section of road.

Just change the overall diameter of your tyres enough and it should be possible

Its probably 156 indicated which means he was actually doing 145-148. I know in my car 4000 rpm equates to about 80 mph, so in theory if the redline was 8000 rpm 160 on the speedo is possible. But the redline isnt that high so a chip which would raise the limiter or remove it completely would be the only way to reach those kind of speeds i think.

Didnt Airwolf do that in one of the episodes, at least The Lady managed to get her engines started and pull up before crashing into the sea. Sadly I think a Clio wouldnt pull up, rather hurtle downwards. I wouldnt wanna be driving that express elevator to hell... lol

These 172s need some Valver/Williams clocks for accuracy. They may be made out of herring bone and tin plate, but at least they tell you the true speed youre going!

yeah i thi9nk the only fair way to get an accurate reading is to use a GPS system like the road angel etc

Not the case from what Ive seen. Williams / Valver clocks over read by 2.5mph on the ones that Ive tested out. All 172 (Cup, MK1 and MK2) clocks were within 1mph from low speed up to top speed.

Top speed in my mk1 is 145mph, with a mile long downhill straight to help out. It was definitely not going to go any faster, and I think youd need a fair bit more power to push the 172 up to 156mph. Maybe this guy did go to 156mph, but Id bet against it.

156 on the clock could only be a true 140 anyway and the book says 138 yea? so pretty much right
No, the speedos are actually pretty accurate, even at those speeds and several have been tested with GPS to confirm!

The R-Sport ECU removes the lower rev-limit in 4th, and so probably 5th too. This would give you a greater top speed.

My car will do more than 120 in 4th gear.

Havent tried it in 5th - never will either.

This is true, but...

The power & torque curves will be dropping off fast at the higher revs, so theres actually no point/need to sing it round into the red in the higher gears.

Also, to be able to pull a 172 to a "genuine" 156mph on a level road will take a lot of doing!

No but its just to illustrate that the limiter has been upped to around 7750rpm instead of 7000rpm in 4th (I think this is what it is as standard).

The theoretical top speed for a Cup in 5th mailto:gear@ 7750rpm"> gear @ 7750rpm is 158.1mph.

The tyres however are rated at 149 mph. Could be interesting.

Frosty m8, Have you had your cup de catted yet. Since I had mine done, the limiter doesnt kick in untill 125! As the WRX I destroyed at dinner found out! lol

Ok, if you wanna do max speed runs, then lets make it a bit of a rule that unless its checked against a standard system it cant be taken as accurate..... and as GPS is the only system that aint that hard to get hold of and use, I recon that is the system we use.

Chrisnnic - decatin doesnt raise the limiter in any way, thatll just be the rsport ecu mate........

Next thing someone will be saying that when doing 120+ in an early Clio2 mk2 1.2 16v the interior light comes on!!!!! - eh fred? LMAO :p
