Why replicate?

  Listerine & Poledo
I'm just wondering

Why do people build "replica" RS cars?

I mean, especially now, by the time you've taken a 1.2 dynamique and slapped all the bodywork and wheels on it and got it sprayed surely you've spent as much if not more than buying a 1x2 i the first place?

I can't see how it would add value either, since all the mods must make the insurance as much as a stock, genuine RS. It's not as if it's gonna fool the next buyer into thinking it's the real deal, especially when the V5 comes out and mentions the 1.2 lump?

Am I just getting old or something? I've never understood the Max-Fast-Boobs-&-Cars mag thing either though. Loads of paint and bodywork, complimented by...what's that? A panel filter and back box?

I'm not trying to make an argument with anyone, I'm sure the rep. builders have their reasons, I just dont understand what they are?

:S

image - because they want to be seen to be driving a fast car but can't afford the running cost of the real thing. Simples really.

Have you seen an insurance quote for a 1*2 for a 17 or 18 year old??? I doubt a quote on a rep would be anywhere near as much, surely?

99% of the time it is insurance costs.... or if someone wishes to have a mile munching diesel.

RS's look the best out of the clio range by quite a distance, so obviously if you take pride in your car, why not make some subtle modifications to make it look better.

The younger lads do it, because its cheaper than insuring a RS, My brother did it to his 1.2, it was a project he enjoyed doing it. It gave him something to work on. Also he sold the Car very easily and he didnt loose a great deal of money on in.

But you could say in the same agruement its pointless modifing a RS because at the end of the day its a Clio and its never going to be a supercar.

People like doing project and those that are really in to cars enjoy working on them and improving them.

I wasted money on stupid things when i was younger, big wheels etc and im still wasting money on my RS's but i enjoy it.

there's good reason for that tho.

and how much do all the body trimmings add to the insurance of a Clio shopping edition?

I guess the image thing carries weight, since the Campus Sport wound up with the RS bumper (or something similar)

£3000. Well, it was to start with. They keep knocking money off my monthly premium every other month too.

I made my rep for under £1000 insurance went up £45 a year and the tax is still cheap the fuel was so much cheaper so all in all the car and insurance came to about 4k an RS clio on similar millage condition and colour would of been 4k for the car 3k for insurance extra 120 on tax and 20 a week in running costs. And if anything goes wrong with a 182 when your 18 earning £100 a week you have next to no chance of fixing it and keeping it nice without getting loaned up to your nuts.

Reps and little cars = Fun young motoring
Performance cars at a young age = Debt debt and convictions

+ try parking a 172 in a college or school carpark at 18 it will be keyed etc

AND MY GOD 3K WHY DO PEOPLE DO IT!!!!

I know a 20 year old with a skyline god knows what he pays then hahaha

wow, my first car was a Corsa Merit 1.5 diesel

no turbo's, not even a glovebox.

and that was 1800 quid for my first years' insurance.

Dunn being on your parents insurance is a very dodgey area.

GoodJ // I used to work in motor insurance managed to get myself a very good deal.

If i was you i would ask my insurance company why there are charging £50 more for a sticker?

They wont have a problem taking your money, it's when you ask them to pay out that you could have an issue.

well, that's what I've heard, I wasn't allowed on parental insurance, hence the 1800 quid for a £5k corsa shopping. Set me up well though

I've got a rep (sort of)...
I've mostly done it to make the car my own, when I first got it I really hated it to be honest.
(Very slow, loads of body roll, sounds terrible, ugly interior + it was my grandmother's car for 6 years so in my mind when I saw it I thought of it as "Gran's car")

But in modifying it I've been able to spend a lot of time with my older brother + I've learnt a hell of a lot about cars. I've spent a fair amount of money on it but my insurance last June at age 19 (my first year on my own policy after 2 years on my mum's) was £1060 with my parents as named drivers.

Money Spent:
Car: ~£1,000
Insurance: £1050
^ Increased by £150 on declaration of mods.
182 Interior: £250
172 Ph2 Alloys: £200
Tyres: £200
Eibach Sportlines: £150
Fogs, Ph2 rear clusters, clear repeaters, front diamond, side skirts : ~£150

Total Spent on car + mods: £1950 (approx)
Total inc. Fully Comp Insurance: £3150 (approx)

All-in-all I don't feel like I've lost out too much much in terms of the money, but either way I've enjoyed it, I've learnt a lot, I've spent a lot of time with my brother and I like my car now - for the first 2 years of ownership (before I started modifying it) I was thinking about selling the car during Uni, but now that I've spent so much time on it I'd be quite happy to keep it as my daily driver till it dies.

Although in an ideal world I'll be able to buy a fun car after uni that I can enjoy at the weekends and use my current car as the daily driver... A man can dream, right!

Also, 50mpg ftw!

Insurance fraud ftl

Not necessarily.

I was main driver on dads policy for 4 years, they knew i was at Uni, 230 miles away from home, with the car up there with me - again with Direct Line.

Even claimed after some berk reversed into me & had no problems whatsoever. Paid £400 fully comp for a fiesta 1.6 si, f*ck driving a 1.2 & paying £3k a year insurance lol.
