Wierd banging noise....please help :)

hey when i reverse my mk1 auto clio, it makes like a clanging noise as if summin has hit something as the steering wheel also shudders when the clanging noise happens...

Its kind of like a once thing, i'll whack it in reverse and then theres a "dumph" steering wheel shudders and all returns to normal?

Can sum1 try explain what this could be? - Fatal not fatal?!
