Williams 3 Problem

  Polo GTi

Hello fellas, was wondering if anyone know what the problem I have with my williams is.

Set off from work the other night and got to the top of the road, and the car stalled, thought it was weird as I didnt really do anything to stall it, thought it might of just been me, started up back fine and went about my way home.

20mins later almost home and car warmed up, went to turn at a T junction depressed the clutch to change to second and the car stalled again whilst rolling. It started back up no problem off i went again.

What I did notice as I pulled onto the kerb at home is that *sometimes* when I depress the clutch whilst driving the revs drop well below 9K, sometimes it stalls but sometimes it rectifies itself, over the last 2 or 3 days its only done this a couple of times.

Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Any help appreciated

Rob

I have a 1.9 Pug which runs a bit like that when its ticking over doesnt really hold at 1000rpm, Ive been told it needs mapping to solve it...dont know whether its the same problem though.

same problem people are having with there valvers when the revs drop, read the other posts, and try the things recomended.

Thanks lads just had a look at this post

So Im looking at either Speedo Sender, ICV or the Throttle position Sensor.

Are any of these thing easy enough to sort with my limited knowledge of engines, but a well used haynes manual? Apart from the TPS as someone mentioned it should be done by a specialist.

Cheers

Rob

i thought mine was the icv but fortunately i had a spare willy 2 to rob bits off at the time an it wasnt the icv, so jus pulled the plugs out n whacked the others in.....hey presto....... no more stallin

Tbh mate, i would also make sure that your alternator belt isnt loose. Most valvers and willys have this problem and mine does it now. She used to stall but i took it to a mates garage who tightened up the alternator belt and now she never stalls - although the revs still drop and bounce back up again when i change gear. I doubt it will be the speedo sensor. Probably the ICV......

Hmm could try the plugs but I only had it fully serviced in March and havent done anywhere near 6K somethign to check though.

Gonna try and get some carb cleaner and blast the ICV and see what that does, and check alternator belt, I dont recall seeing the alternator belt before, probably gonna be a pain in the ass to get to.

Hope it aint the ICV as GSF have ICV at £80.00, am also hoping it aint the Speedo sender as the last time I took the dash off it was a right pain in the arse getting behind the dials.

The alternator belt is a real pain to get to - nut not too bad if you know how. The best thing to do is to remove the bonnet (VEry Easy) and then remove the drives side headlight (again vry easy to do) You will then be able to gt your hands on the alternator belt. There should only be about 2mm of travell if you pull it up and down - it should be really tight. If it is slightly loose then you need to tighten the tensioner bolt with an allen key (i think). That will tighten things up and your car should then idle at a good 900 rpm when warm. This should also stop the car from stalling when you dip the clutch but may not stop the revs bouncing really low and then back up again....

lol best way to adj belt iv found is to leave bonnet on. if u struggle gettin to the adjuster the guide for the cables on the inner wing can be unbolted n moved up, if u still havent got enuff room , drop the o/s eng mount then jack the engine up

Good point 2 live - i was just talking about the express way of doing it! Jacking the eninge up is still a good idea tho - use a block of wood and make sure u undo the drivers engine mount first!! Then jack it up with the block of wood. You will get like half a foot more room then!!!!! You wont break anything (i hope) :D

Right just been out for my dinner and the car never stalled or even looked like it was going to stall.

What I have just noticed is that this morning when it was doing it, it was raining/damp but now its quite warm and sunny, I cant recall if it was damp/wet the other times it stalled but knowing our weather it usually is.

So could it be down to HT leads/distrubutor cap? As the cars running fine now in the sunshine.

Woudl it be worth me replacing these?

Erm, replaceing the dizzy cap may be a good idea - im not sure how to check if that is working. This whole problem happened to me so often about a month ago until i got my alternator belt tightened tho... try that?

Yeah Ill try alternator belt, seems strange as the problem has gone away and its sunny, cheapest I can find Distributor cap, rotor arm and leads for is £52

Thats a pretty good price - but dont spend the cash if you dont need to - tbh, i went through this and spent money by taking the car to renault for a diagnostic check, got a vehicle electrician out and eventually just tightened the alternator belt up which sorted it! I wasted about 150 quid when i didnt need to! I know how you feel though, i couldnt keep my eyes off my rev counter for a month when it was happening coz i was so worried about stalling it! Still worry now even tho its fixed!! One more thing - make sure there is enough cooling going to the engine i.e water in water bottle etc coz if the engine is getting too warm it will trun itself off when you dip the clutch (i know that sounds like an obvious thing but worth a check!)
