right, turn on the PC ( HTCP yet has a really annoying clicky samsung hardrive that resonates in the case)

not actually done anything other than post a few forum replies... paging constantly for 20mins solid.

its all it ever does, a constant defrag like noise and its completley runing my pc enjoyment, i mean it never stops ! its unreal, ive dumped pc gaming because all it ever does is load or page or whatever. it can even interupt video and audio.

its new, it doesnt seem to have any viruses, its not running any checker or anything.. id record it for all to hear but im about to switch it off and use the ps3 webbroswer.

btw i have turned off superfetch and its still on.

heelp or im going back to XP and my next 'pc' will be a MAC

where would i find this mystical gadget ?

surley (unless everyone has mega quiet drives) this is a problem for lots of people, why the f**king f**k does it need to do it.. annoying, pointless s**t.

found this on the web..

Lots of stuff run in the background with Vista. It is not likely you will
ever get to a point that the disk light does not flash occasionally. It
indexes the drives, defrags the drives, relocates most used stuff to the
fastest part of the drive, it builds lists of most used apps, it checks for
updates, it phones home for validation, ..... The list is much longer. The
point is that it is NOT XP, and don't expect to make it act like XP.
Flashing drive lights are what Vista does.

Good luck.

seems it needs to bed in... but ive had this for a few weeks now and hardly use it much for new programs... now its ok, it does go quiet.. but then all of a sudden 30mins into gaming, browsing it starts up for another 20mins and its really loud.

also seems to do it when i first turn on like it has to load every word ever written

not keen on vista TBH so far :(

  Shed.
Im back on Xp mate. Was having the same sort of problems only i sorted them out, not sure how now tho. Im guessing you have turned search indexing off?

Vista is known to run the hard drives more than other OS's, including XP.
It's known to be a feature of the OS, to speed up serach and locate functions.

  Better than yours. C*nt.
As above, it's not XP, don't compare it to and you won't have an issue.

Lesson learnt, don't buy cheap hard drives for HTPCs.

TheBeast3 has a 10,000rpm raptor in it, which is not quiet, and if I leave the machine idle for a while, before or after playing games, there is usually quite a bit of HDD activity. It doesn't personally bother me though as it's a dedicated games rig, and this doesn't happen during games.

Noisy HDD in a HTPC = HDD choice fail I'm afraid, no matter what the OS.

£650 is a cheap HTPC. A decent HTPC case will cost £250-300...

oops, lol well i just wanted bd,hdvd, dvb playback.

roy, your right im looking at a new samsung drive, but again im also interested in mac`s aswell.. may aswell se what there all about ive used them before and got really pissed off with one button affair but they always seem solid, quick and straight forward, its just for browsing and hd content.

It's probably system restore doing its work.

I recently built an HTPC running vista, and once i was up and running i copied over the 500GB or so of movies (.mkv) that i'd collected on various other pc's and drives. Over the next day I noticed continuous HD activity and my free space was slowly getting eaten up (literally 100+ GB of it gradually dissapeared) without me doing anything.

I found out it was system restore making its images. It's not uncommon for system restore to use up to 15% of your drives space, and when we are talking in hundreds of GB this can cause a lot of disk activity.

I turned system restore off as i'm quite happy to fix things myself if i screw it up, and instantly got 120GB space back and the excessive hard drive activity stopped.
