windows XP on two machines?

  Ford Fiesta
if you have XP what you got with one machine can you load it ontyo another machine and use the same product key?

IF you do what happens or will it simply not work, are you not allowed?

Liam

Only way you can do it legally would be get XP pro with a multiple machines license, otherwise it needs registering with ms, so same key won't work twice

if you dont need the actual disc can you just buy a licence key from microsoft cheaper, if so where from?

Depends on if it's the cd is for a branded machine and it came pre-installed on it.. i.e. If it's a HP machine, the reg code sticker on the PC base will say HP and then the reg code underneath, it will then only work on that model of HP as the copy of windows is set up for that pc.

If the Windows XP Software was OEM without a pc, then it's a universal install on any and, in theory you should be able to use the same CD on both pc's. However, I think sharing the same key on 2 machines is, in Microsofts eyes piracy.. Regardless of if you own it.

*edit - what MrAtego said  lol*

^^ Maybe not, they've probably got bigger and better fish to fry..

But Liam wanted to know the score and we've told him.. It's up to him what he does ;)

lol microsoft.

We have the actionpack at work, installed XP on one machine, bottom right hand corner stated that the copy was not legit. Installed vista on another machine, different IP range, also stated that it was not a legit copy.

When you use non-legit ones, they work fine !! :)

I downoaded a copy of XP home edition and a keygen from limewire for my laptop, it works fine but you need to do the updates manually.

If you do it within something like 3 months of the previous registration then it asks questions as it's not likely your re-installing on the same machine...well that is what my perception of it was, not tried it myself.

It is illegal to load the same copy of Windows XP onto more than one PC.

But its not only possible, its easy.

Since another poster has told you what the trick is I guess I'm not giving anything away by confirming it. There's a three month limit on it stopping you installing it on significantly different hardware. Once you had it on one PC that long it assumes you're just upgrading that machine, or moving your copy of XP to a new machine if you install it on different hardware. But it doesn't stop you continuing to use it on the old one.

Toss Windows off and but some opensource Ubuntu on your machine, put it on 1000 machines and nobody give a monkeys.

That how software should be IMO.

thanks for all your replies, most helpful. The xp i got was with my HP laptop. Ive loaded it onto a desktop machine and its working but says it needs registering within 30 days.Just wondered the legal implications of using same key, if you as a person owned the licence or if it was per copy.

If it works on both i wondered if it would stop the original HP laptop xp from working/udating correctly? its about 14 months since i originally rwegistered the first xp.

And like i said wanted to know the legality of it all.
Thanks again

Jesus I'm a dumbarse. Downloaded it, burnt it and got an error that my computer isn't 64-bit. The computer I use is 64-bit, the one I was going to put on it is 32 bit!

That was a good waste of an hour!
