Wineing noise when accelerating

  FF Monaco 172
I’ve noticed recently that when I accelerate the engine starts making a loud wineing noise, which is gradually getting worse and louder. It’s up to date on it services, it’s had the cambelt and the usuals done. Any ideas?

i had the same problem with mine b4, it turned out to be the tyres! because of the tread on them they had to be on a side of the car, thats toyo racing tyres for ya tho lol!!

I don't get a burning smell. How can i tell if it defiently is the alternator thats going?

if the pitch of the wine changes with the revs of the engine then it's a pulley. Either on the Drivebelt or on the Cambelt (less likely, and very unlucky). It could also be a bearing in the altenator (which runs on the drivebelt).
If the pitch changes with the speed of the car, it's probably a wheel bearing. If it were a CV the it would be more of a rumble. If it is this, try working out which wheel it is by cornering it one way and another to releive the pressure from the bearing and see if the wine changes/stops mid corner.

If it's a bearing, just jack the car up and spin the wheel if it makes the noise like your describing then it's a wheel bearing.

I had it, but it changed pitch with the steering, as it turned out to be the pas pump.

Could be a pulley, but probs need someone in the know to work out which one.

you will know for sure when the car won't start/ runs out of spark while driving. Or you can get a mulimeter to it and see if it's supplying voltage as the car ticks over. Bare in mind in could just be the altenator bearing thats gone and not the brushes inside that make it work.
If you know where things are under the bonnet, an old technique to problem finding is to get a long screw driver, Press the handle into your ear or bite it and hold the tip on the suspected faulty item. The sound will be magnified 10 fold when you get the faulty pulley. Be really carefull doing that tho. I wouldnt normally recommend it with such a tight engine bay like the F4R or F7P clios.

When my last bearing went it would only make an audible noise at 25mph+ which is a fair old spin on the wheel of fortune :clown:

The pitch definetly changes with the revs, its loudest between 2 1/2 and 4k revs. how easy is it to sort out, i'm very hesistant to take it into a renault garage if anywhere can do it?
