:rasp:There is, DSL routers won't work on ADSL phone lines

You on ADSL or DSL?

Same thing. ADSL is a type of DSL, as is SDSL, ADSL2, ADSL2+, VDSL, RADSL, HDSL, IDSL etc..............

A "DSL" router does not exist (typo's aside).

As for the original question it all depends on type of DSL and ISP. It's better to try and get a router that use's the same internal chipset as those used in the DSLAM's your line is tied into.

As an example Easynet (Sky, Ukonline) use Conexant Argon chipset's in their DSLAM's and when I was taking part in the UK trials of ADSL2+ a couple of years ago we tried ALOT of router's. Billion's 7402 range (using Argon chipset's) were noticably superior to your Netgears, linksys, Actiontecs etc

Then why can't you use a DSL router if you have ADSL?

Yes but if he goes and buys a ADSL router it won't work on his DSL line. Ok might be same technology, but thats like saying all car engines are the same, as there all internal combustion engines.

if it says adsl/dsl on the box, and you have an adsl/dsl line, itll work.

the only thing you need to watch for when buying a wireless internet routers, is whether it is cable or dsl :)

Ok explain why most websites seperate their routers into "cable/DSL" or "ADSL" and why are the "cable/DSL" ones usually cheaper?

  Clio 172 ph2 + 990SM
cable/dsl routers just require an ethernet connection from the internet modem. adsl routers have the modem built in.

a lot of companies tend to advertise routers as "cable/dsl" when they dont have a broadband specfic modem built in

^^ like the above analogy!

I have been using a range or routers over the last month or so. Started off with a D-Link - its crap. then got a Netgear - that was also crap. shelled out a bit more money and got a Linksys and its awsome! It all depends on what you want to do with it though i would recommend the linksys.

i prefer cable, no f**king about with dailing up etc. just plug it in and it goes :)

ADSL doesn't dialup.. it "syncs" but thats about it.. (same as Cable tho pretty much!).

And as to which wireless router,

Cisco 8*7W (Either 857 or 877) ;)

Billion (a lot of people don't mention them!) are very very good also - Solwise that used to be, can do some pretty advanced stuff out of the box.
