Hard fuckin work...And i only do it as a hobby! I put my prices up big style for two reasons the cost of products and time spent doesn't warrent the cash! And secondly, my back after a full 1 day detail is buggered! lol - Big girls blouse!

As we've both discussed before...

Under pricing jobs is my biggest fall down!!

I can imagine being in pain as i am when i've only just done my car!

Do you not get paid that much if working for a company.

Not really, no.

Only way to make a decent package in my opinion is do it on volume and reducing quality, but there are chains that do that already, and someone will always undercut you.

Premium detailing pays well but you have to be well established to get decent prices. I do it to make some money on the side, but if I declared the tax on it and stuff I wouldn't bother, its hard work for the money. I used to work at a dealership for 6 months doing it and it was backbreaking for ho much I got paid - and my rates were relatively good for the industry.

I know a few professionals who start at 300£, So in essence if you can generate enough custom, you can make a healthy profit, whilst covering consumables effortlessly.

£300 - materials - cost of advertising - travelling expenses - tax - specialist insurance policy (not strictly necessary) = not great.

Factor in your not going to be doing regular work every day for this money then your not going to be the next Branson any time soon.

£300 is about right ;) Materials are literally pennies, a 40th of a pot of zymol carbon will do a whole car and thats less than a £1, I use so little menzerna polish even doing 80 full paintwork correction cars a year I use very little, literally pence a session.

General valeting/Detailing supplies are very cheap and can be watered down e.g. QD's etc.

Rotary pads can be imported quite cheaply and as long as I service the Makita every 200 hrs it will last forever! Every other 200 hrs it needs a new lead mind!

Advertising costs nill, word of mouth!

Insurance is tax deductabe as are most things in life if you have a clever accountant ;)

One of my mates did it after coming out of a retail management job as he loved doing it as a hobby.

After 2 months of long hours, not as much money as he thought and s**t weather, he is now back in retail management lol

I was on £300 a week almost when I worked at a place, which is apparently quite decent. But I worked my nuts off for 50 hours a week, when you break it down I would have probably made the same or more at Tescos...

How much would you get a year if you worked for a proper company? And how many cars do they do a day? 2/3?

No chance! One a day max! - If there's a couple of you, then i suppose you could delegate roles, but you'd still be strugglin to do more than 1 a day!

To do proper detail is a days work at least.

Valeting i.e a wash and quick polish you may bash out a few.

Maybe quite sad to say, but been doing it for, er, nearly 6 years now!!! lol. Worked for quite a few different companys, wages have all varied to be honest. Im on quite a good wage atm, but thats not self empolyed, actually workin for a Renault/Nissan/Skoda dealership.

It is definatly not the easiest job, especially when you get real real bad cars in, but, when finished, its nice to see the finished result.

Detailing is such an american term, but, looks better on CV than Valeter!!!

Our target is 4 a day, but, that does include new and used. And also varries on condition of used, and actually new cars. Fallout can be a huge pain in the ass, but nothing a clay bar would solve, and elbow grease too!!

O right. If you dont mind me asking how much there abouts do you get for delerships? rough estimate

Really depends to be honest. I would hazard a guess of around maybe £13k to £19k. Being self enployed can make you more money, and there are quite a few companies around.

And also the amount of work varies too from place to place. Working at a ford garage, its busy busy all of the time, could do anything from 4 to 8 cars a day!! But on the other end of the scale, working at BMW, no target was set, jus make it look new.
