To some of you this may seem like a stupid question but ive always wondered what that black X is over the front headlights of track cars? What actually is it? lol Like this one..

Pointless on modern cars.

It was used on cars with glass headlamp covers to try and limit the amount of broken glass that would inevitably break and separate on the track.

Modern ones are plastic so don't shatter or create shards when broken anyway.

I take it that's not you in the pic... Clearly representing miss daisy. I don't think there's any tape out there that would keep a loose piece of paper secured if you're going fast enough;)

Yep, to secure broken glass but as stated useless on most modern cars with plastic lenses.

you dont need to on newer cars but i think some people do it to get into the spirit

and also to make it look like a track car..ish

Some tracks have it as a rule, as its pretty hard for them to inspect every set of headlights on a trackday to see if they'll shatter or not...

Lol at doing it to get into the spirit :p

I've seen it requested by scrutineers so I'm guessing it's down to the organisers/safety marshalls.

Its so it will stosp them breaking all over the track but for modern cars it down't matter hence why mot places don't bother trying to impose a outdated law.
