Finally gave in and bought the adapter, however my xbox is in a corner behind a huge brick fireplace and is very nicely shielded from the wireless connection in the house!!!!
Given it plugs in via the USB port can I simply buy a longer USB cable and when in use have the adapter sat in range and connecting via the longer cable?
