i was in same position as you last week, whether to upgrade from xp 32bit to xp 64. I decided to go for it, but personally, after installing it, i didnt really see any performence change what so ever. I also had a ball ache as the drivers that came with my motherboard for sound card did not work so i had to fish about for 64 bit ones. Got all my drivers sorted, and thought thats sorted then... Then i had trouble installing some software i use. I went straight back to 32bit.
If you're after gaming, probably not. About 95% of stuff is written purely for 32-bit anyway, so XP64 makes little difference. There is a small, but steady supply of developers supporting it now though - that and dual-core processors too. Still rare though.
The biggest benefit you'll have (if you need it, that is) is that the memory limit of 2GB per process is no longer there - as in XP32. If you need apps that require more memory, XP64 will definitely give you benefits.
It's actually Windows 2003 Server at it's core, not Windows XP 32-bit with bits bolted on.
I have my home PC as a dual boot XP32 and XP64 machine. Best of both worlds. Vista can stay where it is for now!
I have only found a couple of games that i had issue with on xp64 and there were work arounds. doom3 and the expansion are the only ones that come to mind. But all you had to do was download a small fix for it so it would install the game after that ran fine.
HL2 has a 64bit version specifically for XP64. CSS works fine as well. Its the main game I play. I dont use any other OS apart form XP64 and not had any problems yet in a year of running it.
Hmmmmmm..... Tempted to give it another try tomorrow as im most likely going to reformat anyway. For some reason, the two different program files iratates me :S Don't know why, lol ;x
