You can get oem discs as I did off ebay.

It was meant to be a recovery disc for a Fujitsu Siemens pc but it's the full windows XP. Never had a problem with formatting/installing/updating pc with it. Got the proper code and certificate of authenticity.

Cost me £50 but I'm sure they'd be cheaper now.

Actually still quite dear. Mine was XP Pro by the way.

Vista certainly needs moderately high spec pc so I'd check compatibility.

It's illegal to install OEM copies on your Mac.
You need to buy the full retail version for it to be 100% legit.

Because it's against the OEM License.
Microsoft revised it:

4. SOFTWARE DISTRIBUTION.
4.1 We grant you a nonexclusive right to distribute an individual software license only with a fully assembled
computer system. A “fully assembled computer system” means a computer system consisting of at least a central
processing unit, a motherboard, a hard drive, a power supply, and a case

As you didn't buy a "fully assembled" Mac with XP, you can't do use OEM. (If Apple sold it as an add-on, maybe that would be OK.).
