Yellow Dog Linux or Gentoo on my PS3?

I'm planning on installing one of the above Linux OS onto my PS3 so that I can use Firefox and VLC on my TV. Of the two which is the best version to use?

Also can Linux network ok with my iMac for sharing files?

It'll not break from simply installing a second OS, the system supports installing Linux so fingers crossed all should be ok. If all goes wrong then a HDD format will fix it.

i was joking but seriously, i wouldn't want to play with it that soon in....will a second OS invalidate the warranty?

No it shouldn't do because Sony have the option in the OS to install a secondary system onto the HDD. The warranty will be OK and I'll be able to get extra functionality from my PS3 that will help me avoid having to buy a media server for the TV.

Sony.. unlike M$ (evilness) support the user installing linux onto the PS3 out the box.. infact they also have supported the creation of folding@home software which runs within the linux enviroment..

Basically you can have yourself a linux supercomputer !!

I know there is a PS3 version, but I thought traditionally it was just for Macs. Well it was 6 months ago when I tried to download it for my PC.

Gentoo appears to offer a better UI from what I've read on AVF but it's also harder to install. Maybe YDL will be my best option for tonight.

P.S. I've just signed up for another year here despite no longer having my Clio, the Tech section is still a handy place to post in. 5 posts per 24 hours was getting tiresome for the sake of £5.

Whos feckin idea was this!!! After 3 hours I've abandoned my Gentoo install attempt and will now download YDL for round 2. The instructions were great but unfortunately did not work when I was trying to mount the swap drive. Nobody I asked seemed to know what was going wrong so I'll now attempt to install the same OS as them.

Already having a knowledge of Linux will no doubt help, I was pretty lost once the instructions proved to be crap.

I'll maybe download another version of Gentoo and try again tonight before settling for YDL.

so installing linux os on ps3 - benefits? can you connect a keyboard and mouse to ps3 then? can you print to a printer via ethernet or usb?

can you emulate games off it? or run backup games?

You can connect a wireless or usb keboard and mouse to the PS3 for use within Linux. I plan on using it to view TV series and film downloads on my lcd tv rather than viewing them on my iMac. Net browsing using Firefox on the TV will also be good.

I downloaded a different iso tonight and the install is now running smoothly. Hopefully finished soon so I can start to play with Linux and watch movies.

is it like dual boot so you can run the normal stuff and then choose to run the linux when you want? Or are you changing the system to the new OS?

How long should it take to 'emerge kde'? It's been running for 16 hours now and has still not finished, seems to have frozen on part 25 of 37. Is there a quicker way of installing a nice GUI than this?

16 hours can't be right. Should just be a case of partiton and install which would probably take somewhere between 20 and 40 mins I would have thought.

The Gentoo install did not take long but adding a good looking GUI is a step required after the OS install and on further reading I discovered this can take 1.5 - 2 days to compile on the PS3. YDL install is almost complete and was alot easier to run. YDL will take upto an hour to install off of the dvd. 25 minutes remaining here.

I did that long ago when I owned my XP PC, got a iMac now and love the OS so no need for Linux

As a media player my PS3 is now brilliant.

VLC installed and playing all my downloaded material on my LCD TV perfectly.

can you tell me the link you used to do the good install please so i don't get lost, i'm very much a linux virgin. Also where it was downloaded from.
